Marcy is about 16 weeks old. She is a beautiful fawn with plenty of energy and love. This is our first Great Dane, but we are in love with the breed and plan on getting another. Turns out, Marcy's mother is being given away by the breeder. (Military family- has to leave it behind) Is it good to bring two females together like that? Will Marcy even realize that it is her mother? What are the factors I need to examine before introducing the mother into our home?

No, Marcy will not realize it is her Mother. And worse yet as she gets older she may beat the crap out of her (seriously injure her).
I had a Doberman mother and daughter once. The daughter hated her Mother. When she got older she tore open her Mothers shoulders, requiring numerous stitches and a drain.
I would never recommend getting two females.

RE: Introducing another female Dane. Good idea?
I have a different experience with females. Get them both spayed (the mom ASAP and the daughter at 7 months) and I wouldnt think you would have a problem. I think hormones play alot into females not liking each other.
No, the mother/daughter will most likely not recognize each other. They may remember the scent, but not each other.
Spaying should take out the hormonal flucuations of the temperamental side of having two females, but more importantly (and should be done anyway) firm, specific rules need to be established and the dogs must follow them. Clear leadership on your part is extremely important.

RE: Introducing another female Dane. Good idea?
IME whether mulitples of males or females, it's all about individual temperament as well as pack management.
I adopted several spayed adult females and for many years had three who got along famously well. However all were temperament tested prior to adoption and had successfully lived with other females, so I had the cards stacked in my favor. In contrast, many MAGDRL members have multiple neutered males and swear that they get along together better than females.
Granted it's safer to bring in the opposite gender, I'd never say never about same gender adoptions.

RE: Introducing another female Dane. Good idea?
my fiance's mother has 19 danes. they are all different ages and none are related. 2 are males and 17 are females. she lives in a 4 bedroom home with 1 full city lot fenced in. the dogs all live in the home. she doesnt have a problem. but then there is always atleast 1 person home at all times.
not sure if this info helps. looks like im the only person who has posted about lots of females with no problems.
i have 2 danes , a lab , a cocker spaniel , and 21 pitbulls. 14 are female. im planning on getting 2 more danes and possibly 2 neopolitan mastiffs. i have 46.83acres of land that is all grass and trees with a very small creek. its all fenced. i have a heated outbuilding where all but 2 bullies stay. i alternate which ones come in for the night. the lab runs loose and the cocker is an indoor dog. we dont have a problem unless i rescue a bully from a pound that is un-adoptable because of aggression. but even then the problem usually goes away in a few days with training and attention.
dont get 2 unless you can give them the proper attention. no more then 4 hours alone ever in my opinion and only that long once they have been together for a good long while and zero problems have emerged.

RE: Introducing another female Dane. Good idea?
I no people have multi of same sex and fine and others not fine.I no bitches that are fine and then boom and I no most probs happen later with age.The thing is most people arent experienced enough to handle same sexes and if problem occurs cant or dont want to take measures to keep seperated etc...to make it work. Many times people will buy new puppy then when it matures their older bitch puts young bitch in its place and then a fight happens then the young one is dumped because the new one doesnt get along etc...theirs many stories where later it doesnt work with 2 same sex.I have one bitch hates other bitches since she was attacked when she was younger by someones older bitch and I have 2 I can let be with anyone.Im always on guard with letting any out together if same sex as anything can happen at a snap of fingers. In many years Ive seen many things and pet homes need to be prepared for the what can happen and what and how theyd deal with it.Yes Ive seen mother and daughters raised together hate each other few years later.I have friends with pets thats fixed and have same issues sometimes as those of us with intact animals.

Agree Lisa. :7 I can't speak for others, but beyond picking the right fit temperamentally, management is a huge part of making same-gender packs work. Ours live peacefully together in a SFH in the city, but we run our home like a boot camp. We're strict about NiLiF, do daily obedience drills with each, feed separately, no toys/treats unsupervised, and beds enough for all so there's no competition between our girls. When tne rare squabble breaks out, "OFF!" immediately breaks it up.
Problem is, JohnQPublic doesn't want to put this much effort into management. For them, safer to adopt the opposite gender.

EXACTLY why I wont place 2 same sex together.Unless its someone experienced and capable nd understand and have seen what can hppen its not worth the risk to me.Too many times I see people have to rehome because of this and in pups best interest Id rather not chance it.
