GENERAL

Height is measured from whithers (top of shoulder to ground)
Reg'd registered with a kennel club. Not a measure of quality.

 

HEALTH TERMS/CERTIFICATION ORGANIZATION

BAER Brain auditory. Evoked Response: a cert. program for hearing.
CERF Canine Eye Registration Foundation: a cert. program for vision.
HD Hip Displaysia: a hip/joint problem that is regarded as hereditary,
although environmental factors do play a part: breeding stock in
breeds known to carry HD should be x-rayed clear.
OFA Orthopedic Foundation for Animals: a body that conducts
procedures such as screening for Hip Displaysia.
PDA Patent ductus arteriosis: a congenital heart disease.
PennHIP A method of assessing hip-joint laxity.
PRA Progressive retinal atrophy: a serious eye problem, regarded as
hereditary: breeding stock should be cleared as being free of this.
PS Pulmonic stenosis: an obstruction to the column of blood leaving
the right side of the heart.
SAS Subaortic stenosis: an obstruction to the column of blood leaving
the left side of the heart.
TSH Thyroid stimulating hormone: a method of testing dogs for hypothyroidism.

 

ORGANIZING BODIES

AKC American Kennel Club. In the U.S. there is also the U.K.C. (United
Kennel Club).
ARBA American Rare Breeds Association.
CFC Canine Federation of Canada: a small registry body for some of the lesser-known breeds.
CKC Canadian Kennel Club: main registry body for purebred dogs in
Canada.
CRBA Canadian Rare Breeds Association.
FCI Federation Cynologique Internationale: coordinates national canine
organizations in Europe, Latin America, Africa, Asia, and
Australia.

 

PERFORMANCE PLACEMENT TITLES

BIS Best in Show: awarded to the dog judged best at the conformation show.
BISS Best in Specialty Show
BPIS Best Puppy in Show: awarded to the puppy judged best at a conformation show.
HIT High in Trial: the dog that performs best at an obedience trial.

 

TEMPERAMENT TESTS

CGC Canine Good Citizen: a series of tests to determine if a dog is well-trained and obedient in public. (A requirement for most therapy-dog programs).
TT Temperament tested: the dog must pass certain tests that indicate a stable temperament
