We just found out that our Merl Dane Dozer 3.5 months old has HOD. This has got to be the most helpless feeling in the world! There is not much I can do for him except for give him aspirin, and the poor pup can't even stand except for long enough to pee! If anyone has any info or knows of something else I can do please help!! Thanks!! I am including a picture to show his legs this is what happened in just 2 days!! And needless to say despite the pain he is a little embarassed!

Oh my gosh....the two of you are soooooo sweet! I am so sorry you are having to go through this with your pup. I will be wishing the best for both of you, please feel free to pm me if you need to talk about it. There is hope. I don't have experience with hod but I know others will be of more help andf support. The pic just is so endearing. I am glad your baby has you as a Mommy!

Yes, what are you feeding him? You should lower protein levels. Was he diagnosed from xray? HOD is VERY dangerous! Here is a link and I would follow Hazel Gregory's HOD tonic.

I have dealt with HOD, and you need to keep on top of things. Yes, Hazel Gregory's protocal will help. Also, please email me directly at: MKim007@aol.com
and I can share with you the meds that my vet has used and it has worked.
This can take months to clear up, and even when he starts feeling better, continue to keep him quiet or the pup will relapse.

What are you feeding him? How much? How often?

From the pics, it looks more like a severe case of knuckling than HOD.......did your vet take X-rays? Does your boy have a temperature?

There are many threads in the archives on HOD. Alot of experiences various owners have gone thru and what they used to help their pups recover.

I would start your pup on the HOD tonic immediately. 3 TB....3 x's a day (given with each meal).
Tonic is 1 cup Raw Apple cider vinigar to 3/4 cup honey........warmed in the microwave together, stir until mixed. Leave on counter.

              Keep us updated.....good luck!

Our Annie's legs resembled your pup's. She had 'distal ulnar physes closure'. I was just reading that since HOD interrupts the blood flow to the growth plates, it can cause what Annie had. Her front feet turned out like your puppys (valgus).

He is on Eagle large breed puppy, has been since he was 6 weeks old, I feed him 2 cups 3xdaily, he never eats that much but that is what I put out for him.

Stupid question...what is the difference in raw apple cider vinegar, and the stuff you get at the store?

                      "Mother"

The active ingredients that is what you need to give your boy is in the RAW apple cider vinigar.
The processed Apple cider is clear without the "mother".

Rereading this.........it sounds silly. Hope it makes sense.

I would take him off this food immediately and feed him an *adult* quality kibble that is no more than 21% protein.
Canidae Lamb and Rice, NutriSource Lamb and Rice, Nutro Natural (in the dark green bag) are just a couple that come to mind. Staying with the meat source of Lamb would be good since that is what he is used to eating.

I live in a podunk Idaho town, where on earth can I find this "Raw" ACV? And same with switching food, I will go after work to the nearest place...70 miles to get it! But should i switch him over gradually?
Thank you so much for your imput! I would drive a million miles to make him feel better!!!

I would get him off of the puppy formula. I have found the puppy formula still don't have the right ratios for puppies. Some are too hot.
Switch to an adult maintenance. I co-own a puppy that was switched to Innova adult and is doing great on it.

It's a good idea to find a holistic vet who can try Chinese herbs, supplements, acupuncture, and chiropractic care. This does help in the early stages of HOD. The may still have to be put on an antibiotic & pain meds.

Chloramphenicol is an older antibiotic that should be used in serious HOD cases.

The cause of H.O.D. remains unknown. Hindered by a lack of research
dollars available to study such a rare disease, veterinary
researchers are unable to agree on the cause of H.O.D. A review of
the scientific literature since the 1930's reveals that the cause of
H.O.D. may be one or perhaps a combination of the following:
genetics, nutrition, infection, trauma, autoimmune disease, hormone
                              imbalance, or reaction to vaccination

                              http://www.petshealth.com/

I think more vets/breeders need to do more research on HOD like
symptoms!!! Food is not the primary cause of this problem. I have
had many friends who have dealt with this horrible health issue,
even when their puppies were on the very best food!! Ask Mrs.
Gregory, who is a very long time dane breeder/judge.... She will
tell you it has NOTHING to do with food!!! That's because the danes
                              relapse after switching foods.

This is just a few of the articles I have on this subject. Some of
my mentors have done EXSTENSIVE research on HOD and have gathered
info from all of these webpages, horse vets/breeders and other
                              breeds that suffer this condition.

Some bloodlines and individual Weimaraners are also susceptible to
vaccine-induced autoimmune problems, the most prevalent form of
disease being Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy (HOD). The role of
vaccines in triggering this condition is well documented. Despite
the name, this is a complex disease (syndrome) that can effect many
different body systems, not just the bone and joints. The condition
can be avoided by simply delaying and/or administering the different
vaccines separately. A revised vaccination protocol, as well as
other health concerns in the Weimaraner can be found on the
