  • As sick as he is, he enjoys eating

In the course of Petro illness, he has gotten so old looking, muscle tone gone, sagging belly, and bones showing. He needs help getting up, can't stand for very long. He poops twice a week, pees once a day. Yet, he looks at me with bright eyes and an alert face and ask, "Is it mealtime?". He is drinking and eating ok but that is a contradiction to his illness.

I don't understand why he is so weak in the legs. I have contacted Purdue and University of Illinois and I ask for a consultation to look at the medical records of his regular vet, the internist, the oncologist, and the cardiologist, plus the results of xrays and ultrasounds. I asked that they evaluate the records and provide a plan of what they would do to help Petro. The response that I got was to make an appointment and bring the dog in. Not what I wanted. So I am stuck with no medical help and Petro and me are on our own.

I'm sorry to hear that you aren't getting any co-operation. It would be good if you could make an appointment without your dog to go in along with medical records, test results etc and talk to them and then maybe make an appointment for him if warrented. I do know that most vets do want to see a pet even though they have all test results & records from previous vets/specialists so they can form a hands on opinion themselves and see if there is something that has been missed or developed since last testing/exam.

He's 8 right? Is he a larger Dane? Did the cancer spread beyound that toe?
How's his overall conformation? How steep is his croup? How angled are his legs?
Hip dysplasia is what rarely cripples Danes, its more commonly arthritis and conformation that can not support a dogs mass.
Overall wasting condition could be a sign of his age/stiffing joints and his lack of using them.
IMO most animals that are still eatting still feel pretty good and some just don't age gracefully.
If his cancer spread then it can/does eat away at bone, joints and muscle.
