  • Skin darkening

Bingo is my 5 1/2 yr old English Shepherd mix. As he has gotten older I have noticed his skin darkening. It is especially prominent on his belly but I'm also seeing it now on his feet. His belly and feet are white which probably makes it more noticeable. Is this a sign of thyroid issues? He's been harder and harder to keep at a healthy weight lately but switching to a lower calorie food has helped. I'm just wondering if he can be showing some thyroid symptoms but still have a nice coat? He sheds like a blizzard but he's done that the whole time I've had him.

I've noticed this on my Golden, too. I'm interested in the answers you'll get.

It seems our 12 year old Staffy Bull's skin is a little darker but he's also a dark brindle color. At that age it wouldn't be a bad idea to get some blood work done if for no other reason than to get good baseline levels for any future problems. I wouldn't rush to the vet about it but I'd definitely ask them the next time I was there.

Thanks for your input. We're heading in to the vet probably tomorrow for another issue so I'll bring it up.
