  • European Great Danes .VS North American Great Danes

Is there a reason why the North American Great Danes are so tall and skinny? The Europeans look more like a giant mastiff.

I am guessing it's because the breeding guidelines in Europe are more strict compared to North America?

Would I be correct in saying that the European Danes are how they originally were?

There isn’t a "European" or "North American" Great Dane Bloodline, there all just Great Danes.

The difference is with the mentality of the breeders. Historically in Europe Danes that are thicker and more Mastiff like were bred and in America the slimmer taller Danes were bred.....

      I gotta disagree.

My breeder travels to Germany, France, Hungary etc and imports the dogs for breeding here in Canada. You should see these Great Danes. They are absolutly massive but not as tall as a traditional American Dane.

There is a HUGE difference. You could not enter a Euro Dane into a dog show in North America. Vice versa in europe.

Here is an example of a European dane. This is one of my breeders dogs. Her name is Delta and she is a 3year old female.

There are several discussions on this topic in the archives:

I believe that one or two of the discussions may have the standards from other countries which are similiar to the US standard.

Well behaved danes are not born. They are “made” by responsible and caring dane owners.

Quick history lesson here folks, the Dane was breed to have the speed of a greyhound to chase down the game, and the power of a Mastiff to pull game down, and hold it down for the hunter to come in and dispatch it...historically the Germans breed a lighter dogs for the mountainous areas and a heavier dog for the flatlands... The modern standard calls for a dog somewhere in between.... and historically the Dane has always been classified in the Mastiff or Mosslers group...

In the European Danes I see fantastic front-end assembles but the rears are generally very poor, seeing way too much lip on the Euro dogs... also a lot of short muzzles... One of the things I always ask my self could the Dane do the job it was originally breed for? IMO there are more American Danes that look like they could do the job than the Euro ones...
