  • Red alert for iowa fanciers: Iowa breeder bill

I wanted to preface this thread by acknowledging the fact that there isn't a huge number of show/hobby breeders on DOL, however, this bill (SF-2254) that is railroading its way through legislation right now actually pertains to pet owners as well! The reason being, if this bill passes the rules and regulations will be so difficult, outrageous and/or to expensive to comply with that hobby/show/responsible breeders will not be able to continue. Most commercial breeders are already USDA licensed, so this bill will have little impact on them. In fact it will make 'milling' easier because there will be less competition from the hobby/show breeders. Joe Public will have no other option than to line the pockets of puppy mills or go through a rescue to get their pets ( because reputable breeders will be few and far between...)

    Friends,
We must make show people aware of what is going on and take immediate action!! Our rights to own and breed dogs are vanishing before our eyes, we need come together and fight this bill. Are you aware that since the first bill passed in 2010 you are in violation of the law if you own more than 3 in- tact animals or if you sell even 1 puppy? Are you aware that this makes you a commercial breeder!? Two years ago a friend of mine; a fellow club member, was turned in by someone and she was forced to be inspected, jump through the hoops, pay for their license and a vet inspection... But realize this, if this new bill (SF 2254, formerly SF-2166) passes and you are turned in you will be a criminal, could be forced to pay a daily fine and could have your dogs confiscated and disposed of if you do not comply! Please read through this in it’s entirety. Included is a link so you may read through the changes for yourself, all 27 pages are there. Pass this on to everyone you know, call and/or write your congressman, encourage clubs to donate to support the lobbyist that the Iowa Pet breeders have already hired ( small beans compared to PETA’s $$$ backing this ) If we don't take action none of us will be breeding, showing or putting on shows in the near future. This only came up on Feb 13 and already passed through the committee and on to the Senate, we need to unite and move on this now. Please pass on to everyone you know!! Duplication won’t hurt, but complacency will!

There is a group of hobby breeders/fanciers/exhibitors gathering at the State house on March 5th from 10:00am-2:00pm to rally against those lobbying for these ridiculous changes, please plan to attend if you can!! There is power in numbers, we MUST unite!

Here is a link from the AKC website about the Iowa alert: http://www.akc.org/press_center/article.cfm?article_id=5310

Please call and/or write your representative(s) or senator(s)! Urgent action is required!

I am not from Iowa, but may I suggest you do a Change.org petition and get it out and post it on all breed specific Facebook pages and you can get a couple hundred thousand signatures which should stop it. It has worked for lots of people. Empahsize the puppy mill aspect. Do not leave that out.

It is an outrageously uninformed and stupid bill and, yes, will be to the advantage of the blankety blank puppy mills!

thank you Merrymeadow for the suggestion! I do believe someone is working on that and we have a group of people organizing a Federation help us prepare and organize to fight this battle.
