  • Cropping advice

So...My friend just got a Dane puppy, 7 weeks 15 lbs, gorgeous female, black, perfect health the vet says.

She is wanting to crop her ears (as you see i love my natural boy but she wants a crop so.... whatever) I told her that I would ask around cause her vet said her girl may look better with natural ears.

She said that the vet said Danes whose ears stand the best, have lips and thicker cartilidge in their ears and with the type of ears Becca has longer ears and no "lip" at the top to make the prick up and forward. Would she be better off leaving them natural, or would a specialist in the Dane cropping world be able to make them stand. I am just curious that this makes a difference or not. ??

    What does her breeder say?

If the vet is making generalizations and she has any reservations .. I would get another consult.

A backyard breeder (BYB) is someone who has been deemed not a reputable breeder.

A "Responsible Breeder" supports their buyers, supports their own dogs, and supports the lives of any fututre puppies by having (and keeping up with) all the appropriate health testing suggested by the GDCA.

I would speak to my breeder and/or a vet who specializes in cropping. I am not buying what the vet is selling.

If she does decide to go ahead with cropping please advise her to go with a vet with GREAT DANE cropping experience. Get her to ask the vet for photos of his previous work. I'm not a huge fan of the process of cropping, I think the end result is very regal when done right though, and it is such a shame to put a Dane through the procedure to end up with horrible military short, wide bell ears. Eugh. Natural is much better than a poorly cropped Dane.

She took her to a clinic who said they don't specilize in Dane crops. I havent asked what he breeder says, but I think thats a load of crap. I think he just doesnt wanna mess it up cause he is scared of a Dane crop.

I actually don't know where she got her pup... I should ask, I sure hope it wasn't a BYB...

So she had it done at that clinic!?!?!?!?!!? If so, then yeah, she should have left it natural.

NO she has not done it. I told her to research and i would help find her a reputible Dane Specializing veterinarian that could tell her the best option for Becca. She got her shots at the vet clinic I mentioned. She has a consultation appointment this weekend with a vet that has 3 great danes of his own and specializes in cropping. She may pay more, but it is worth it to me.
