  • Ear Implants: Neuticles.com ?

We have been consistently taping since we got our Dane at 12 weeks and his ears flop over the middle of his head like a bonnet...This is the position that his ears were placed in when the cropping was first done. The Vet swears this is normal and not why they are this way today. I am not sure that is accurate...Anyway, my male is huge now and he looks so ridiuclous when his ears are not posted and it looks like he is wearing a hat. Is there any hope they will stand and any solution? Has anyone ever had ear implants put in? I checked out Neuticles.com for a possible solution. Has anyone ever had this done successfully? After all the months of consistant taping and all my dog has gone through...I would like it to pay off.

Thanks for any suggestions or reviews.

hold old is your dog, it can take a year of taping, I have heard of ear implants being done on dobermans, with good results, you could also re crop for a shorter length depending on his age right now. some dogs do not have the right ear leather thickness for a successful crop. 12 weeks is very late for an ear crop and I would expect a longer crop to take until a dog is 11 months if cropped that late. 6 to 8 months is the normal amount of taping, but it can go on for much longer.

Can you post a picture? If you are showing him, I don't think the implants are allowed. I have heard of posting ears taking up to 2 years. Maybe a different method is what is needed. Have you been gently pulling the ear up and out before placing the post? You vet is wrong. That is not a correct position to post ears in and that IS why they are lying over his head now. It might be too late to fix but if you post a picture maybe someone who has experienced this can chime in.

Implants work great, I know a few people who have used them with success. That said they are illegal in the ring.

You'd be taking the risk of another surgery. Is it worth it, especially since you can't show with implants.

Although I hate a flopped crop I would have to think about this really hard before doing it. As Dee said it is another surgery and I don't know if I would want to put my dog thru it. This is just my opinion and I still don't know 100% what I would do in that situation.

Surgery is always scary. Personally, I would try to continue taping. How long have you been posting? Then you could always do the surgery later if taping didn't work over the long term.

If they aren't going to be showing them they could always put them in while they have him under for his neuter. I have seen a dog in a different breed who's crop flopped and they went in and scored the middle of the cartilage to create scar tissue which made the ear stand and they were still able to show because there was no artificial implant.

Thanks to all for your thoughts...He is 11 Months and each ear is over the other and shows no improvement. We will not show him but need at least normal looking ears if not straight up. If you do know who has had successful implants please send me at least the names of the Vets they used and where. If they are willing, have your friends contact me directly to discuss. Thank you! DLB

Personally, if your dogs ears are as bad as you describe them now, I do not think they will ever stand without some sort of intervention.
How are they being taped? Type of posts? Who has been doing the taping? Also 12 weeks was too late to crop him, in my opinion.

As for the Vet saying that is how he was supposed to come home, I absolutely disagree with that....but I will tell you that is not the first time I have heard that either. One of our breeder members here(Susanne) had an issue with a Vet doing this before. We always sent dogs home with a Styrofoam cup on the head, ears taped up to it. I left Milly's cup on for 1o days... I taped for 8 weeks and she was done. Does your dog have a super long crop? Are you wanting to show him?

If you can, please post pictures. Also, post some if you have any pics of him in posts/taped.

I can totally understand you wanting your dogs ears to stand...I get that and would feel very disappointed if I were in your situation. However, please do not forget you chose to have elective, cosmetic surgery for your dog and as with any surgery there are no guarantees. I am sorry if I am off base, but your above statement sounds so cold. I would hope you would love and enjoy your dog, no matter the condition of his ears, especially since he did not have any say in it. I certainly would if my girls ear did this, and I am not against cropping as you can see. I really hope that you did not mean this the way it sounds.

They are people I have met at parks and various shows across the Country. I do not have specific contact information to pass along. I was simply stating that the procedure works and is an available option. I would try scoring the ears before I would do the implants, but your cropping vet should be able to share the pros and cons of either option.
