Holly is having some gunk from her ear cropping. I have been applying Gold Bond before taping... and I don't notice a funky smell coming from them. I cleaned them with some peroxide and warm soapy water before taping this morning... let them dry... then gold bond and put them up. In the picture you can see some of the oozy appearance along the outside edges. She is almost 2 weeks post surgery. Also this may be a dumb question.. but with the peroxide and gold bond... is there any risk with it getting in the ear canal??

Unisolve is great! It will make removing tape so much easier for you and your pup!!!

I trust my vet and feel very comfortable with the her diagnosis yesterday. Let me correct myself... she said that it could be the "start" of an infection... thats why she prescribed the antibiotics. And the only area of concern was along the outside edge on the base of the ear... and it is visible with her tapes on. It is looking alot better this morning & there is no raunchy smell or oozing today.
But thank you for your advice... I def don't want my baby to lose her tips!

I would not post her ears up until she is completely healed! Let the ears heal completely especially if she has an infection. The moisture trapped under the tape cannot be good for an infection. That just screams infection to me. I had a dane that lost her tips to an infection! Thats just me though and I would find a different vet!

Thank you for the responses. She is on some antibiotics... the vet said that it looks like the beginning stages of a little infection. She is taking the antibiotics 2 xs daily... has had 3 doses... and I swear it already looks better. We were told by our vet that since she has a little infection to keep the ears up no longer than 3 days at a time until the infection clears up. She said to clean the ears really good with some warm soapy water and alcohol... let them dry for a few hours... cover them with goldbond... then back up they should go. And to smell them frequently.... and if they are stinky to take them down and let them air out for a few hours.
Plus, I ordered some Unisolve (picking it up today)... I'm excited to see how well it works. (The things we get excited about as dane owners!)
Also, her posts keep coming out.... (she is a REALLY hard player with my other dogs). I'm going to try the skinbond/osteobond to see if this helps with that problem.
Thank y'all again!!!
PS Her stiches are the desolvable kind... and yes, my breeder had her cropped before she came home

I think a better question to ask would be how others re-taped/ general ear care during the first month.

I just took my Dane to the vet for shots and they told me he had an ear infection. There was lots of wax build up and dark gunk in his ear. The vet prescribed ear meds for ten days and he should be better. Maybe you should see the vet. He might have an ear infection. Good luck!

Not sure about the peroxide issue but Enzo had the same thing (still does a little towards the end of his week) post-op. I freaked the first time, like 3 days into and called the vet asking if I should clean it or bring him in. They cleaned and retaped his ears (all of his retapings were included in the cropping price) said it was nothing to worry about just his ears draining. HTH

In the picture it looks as if the ooziness is just the "wounds" scabbing over and trying to heal.... I would stop with the peroxide (which eats away at the scabs) and just use mild soap and water or ear wash to clean the ears... If your extremely concerned give your vet a call....
