I was looking into ear implants and and came across 'ear stringing' on a Doberman forum. Does any one know anything about this? Maybe it is only a Doberman thing? Has anyone ever had ear implants done or does anyone know of any recropping ear vets in Wisconsin? Eden is no show dog, but I sure would like her ears to stand

Scoring or stringing? Scoring involves cutting surface marks into the ear where it breaks to cause scar tissue. The scar tissue helps prevent the ear from breaking in that spot. Button holing is another techinque. The vet sews a button at the break, which causes scar tissue to develop and strengthen that spot.sigpic

I'm pretty sure it said 'stringing'. I think it involves suturing something, but I have no idea. I think all Eden needs is scar tissue on the cut edge of her ears about 1/2 way up in the "soft" spot. It doesn't take much to hold that area and the tops bounce right up into correct position. Could this be broken cartilidge? It's funny that both ears fold in the exact same spot. I think if her ears were just a little bit shorter they would stand fine, or if the cartilidge wasn't soft in the one area they would stand at the length they are if that makes sense.

If I were showing him then I might put a lot more thought into it, but since I'm not I'd hate to put him through anymore just for what I want "looks".

My first dane Sunny had sort of a failed crop job. We tried taping for awhile, but she was a year when we got her. I took her to a cropping vet here in town for his opinion on re-cropping her and he said not to. He said that not only is it more painful, there is no gurantee that it will work. We got creative with how we held them when showing.
I personally wouldn't do implants either. I knew a guy with a dobe who did them and it was uncomfortable for the dog. His wasn't a show dog either. If you had a really good specimen and you were going to show, then it might be worth a try. Otherwise, you might have to learn to live with it. We did.
Here is my Sunny girl in her Halloween costume with her "wind swept" ears. LOL.
Her right ear when she was alert, would curl over her head! The other one never did stand up.sigpic
