• How to remove the Skin Bond?

I finally located some Skin Bond and hubby and I decided to give this a try when we tape next time which will probably be Sunday. I do have a question regarding this product. Since so many Dane people use it I assume it is not going to harm puppy's ears?????
And after using it and then leaving the taping in for approx 5 days or so how do you "gently" remove the popsicle stick with the Skin Bond on it from the ear? I think I read there is a product called Medi-solve as an adhesive remover, where might I find this product and is this safe for the ears...
Sorry for soooooooo many questions on taping of the ears. Many people had suggested I find a breeder or vet who could show me how to go about doing a good taping. After purchasing our puppy (who already came to us with his ears taped) the breeder has taken violently ill and understandably we have not been bothering her. As for other breeders we have come across people who really don't want to offer any info as we didn't purchase the puppy from them. And finally we can't even find a vet who supports ear cropping anymore let alone knows how to tape. So hubby and I thanks to this list have been "winging" it and doing the best we can.

Any advice on the best way to use the Skin Bond and how to remove it is muchly appreciated..

RE: How to remove the Skin Bond?

LAST EDITED ON Sep-07-01 AT 12:27PM (PST)[p]I use "Skin So Soft" bath oil from Avon and put some in a small dish and dip my finger in it and wet the junction of hair and tape or Skin Bond. The oil allows the adhesive to soften enough to gently pull the tape or stay from the ear. Some hair does come off but if done slowly it doesn't hurt. A plus is that they smell really good after. <G>

RE: How to remove the Skin Bond?

Hi Barb!

My breeder tapes Magick's ears for me, and we use skinbond and the adhesive solvent we use to remove it is "Uni-Solve". It costs about $8 for a bottle, and lasts for a reasonable time.

I basically soak the tape on his ears in it, and a couple of minutes later it'll just slide off. Once that's done, I swab his ears with a cotton ball dipped in uni-solve to remove any traces of skinbond. After that I go over his ears with a cotton ball dipped in alcohol (not the 151 proof kind -- that's for later -- haha) to basically get ride of the uni-solve.

Being the obsessive compulsive dork that I am, I'll often also give him a face/ear wipe with a washcloth dipped in warm water.

Here's a link to the place I get my uni-solve from (it's relatively hard to find in stores).

(wow, the price went up, I just noticed - oh well, the no-pain removal is way worth it)

Let me know if you have any other questions

RE: How to remove the Skin Bond?

Local drug stores or where you got the skin bond should sell "detachol" or other solvents to remove it. Unisolve sounds similar. I know others that also use Ether to remove it, but that
is more difficult to find.

Definitely DO NOT use it if you do not already have a proper solvent for that use on hand. You can never be assured the taping will stay on as long as you plan.
