    Hi all,

Am a new Dane owner, our 6 month old has a large crate wich she sleeps in, but I think she is quickly growing out of it. Any sugguestions on a crate we can buy that will last her entire growth?

Also, which crates are your favorites? Shipping type crates? Wire type crates?

    Would appreaceate any info. Thanks!

(Wasnt sure where to post this, thought training was closest)

I like the Midwest #99 wire crate. It's plenty big enough for any Dane. You can get them at Petsmart and probably other places. Expect to pay lots of money for it. Do a Google search on it and you will find many places that carry it.

If you've got the space, to save money I bought a 13x7 run & put it in my garage, carpeted & when my pup stops eating couches he's got two waiting for him. It's heated in the winter & shaded in the summer so comfortable year round. 1/2 the price of the dane crate I only paid $150 for it.

        RE: Crates

My dane is 7 months old and I actually purchased the Midwest crate at Petsmart just last night. I shopped around online and found Petsmart to be the cheapest at $229.99. However, when I got to the store it was priced at $269.99. I asked about the price difference and the manager told me some things were priced differently online and if I brought in a printout off the site showing this they would match the price. I would maybe expect this if they were going to match a competitor store price, but not from the same store chain. After pleading my case and explaining I was not aware of this policy and I didn't want to make another trip(20 miles)he finally gave it to me for the online price. Just a heads up incase your local Petsmart works like the one in my area. As far as the crate, it is really spacious and I am glad I made the purchase!

Anyone have any thoughts on the Giant vari kennel? The dementions are 48d x 32w x 35t. She only sleeps in there, we do not put her there during the day. Thanks =)

It might be too small to really stretch out. If she does stand her head will likely have to be bent down. What is done with her when you leave? Mine are uncrated at night by 4 or 5 months old & tethered to me (in bed) until I am convinced they aren't going to go eat the house or potty in the house. Only went flying out of bed once.

We have that size crate and Dutchess has to hold her head down if she goes and gets in it. There isn't enought room in it either for her to stretch out when she lays down.

Have you considered an xpen? We got one for Odin when he outgrew his last crate - we love it!!! Odin's never tried to jump over it (not top or bottom came w/ it). It's easy to transport b/c it folds down flat and can be folded to a smaller size as your dane grows. We paid less than $80.00 for ours (8 panels). They come in different heights, too.

I crate until they grow out, then I short leash\tether them to a spot with a big pillow\bed seems to work really well, those big crates are sooooo expensive. Just my opinion, in the aspect of house training the crate becomes there den not the house.

I also vote for the Ex pen. }( }(

Gives them so much more room than a crate...plus with a crate, I tend to pile all sorts of junk on top.

I hope your not suggesting that your dog is tethered when you are not home. That is unsafe & you are likely one day to come home & find your dog dead. Years back I had a woman contact me for pet sitting when we got to the "how is your dog left" question & that was her answer I told her I was not the pet sitter for her. There is so much wrong with that solution.

Please reconsider crating your dog if that is what you are doing.

                          Boy do I agree with you about the tethering. At first I thought you were addressing me...then I reread #8 post. {With the new forum, it's difficult to know which #post is which.}

I know of a Boxer owner who lost her dog... by hanging. Tyed up close enough to an open staircase. Tethering is dangerous...if you are not right there.

Sure crates and Ex pens are expensive...but it's the price you pay for keeping a dog safe.

I use an xpen for Bakir. He's not the biggest boy, but it gives him plenty of room. Of course I bought a crate for Sabah. With her SA I'm afraid she'd bust through an xpen. The wires are thinner on those than the big crates.

I bought a collosial crate for zoe when i got her at 10 weeks, i had to use the divider cause it is so big! it was about 300 bucks but it is so big! I know a dane owner that has a dane/mastiff mix, that dog is huge 220 lbs easy 38 inches high and he could stretch right out!

imo, truthfully i'm all about the xpen too.. if you think about it, 300 bucks for a crate that the dog is in for 4 to 6 hours a day?
