Hi everyone, I need some advice. I took my almost six month old dane brodie to the dog park today with her golden retriever friend and there's a pond for the dogs to play in. The golden retriever jumped right in but Brodie did not want to get in the water at all. she went in once, but went so deep her head went under, then she swam out and absolutely would not go back in. She doesn't mind baths and stuff so she shouldn't be scared of it, is there any way I can encourage her to swim? thanks for your help!

RE: scared to swim?
OK, this may sound like a silly question, but...
Jazz is 5 months old, and LOVES his baths. He climbs into the bathtub whenever he hears the water running! As the weather is finally warming up here in New England, I was wondering about him swimming. We have many lakes very close by. If he decides to go in, is it safe to assume he'll be able to swim? Or, is this something he'll learn?

RE: scared to swim?
Our dane girls both swim. DH taught them by getting in with them and playing fetch in increasingly deeper water. The 4 year old loves it, and the 1 year old tolerates it, and will do anything her sister does just to be a copy cat. My advice, is keep it positive and get in with them, if possible. At first, they may be a bit unsure, and paddle and splash awkwardly. They eventually get the hang of it, and like to play in the water with other dogs. Maybe lure them with treats or toys, or yourself.
If your dane hates it, though, don't force them. Nothing sadder than people who throw their dogs in against their will and it will just scare your dane from water for good. Also, keep a close eye on them and don't let them get over tired - and stick to areas you are familiar with or clear water so you can see if there are hazards under the surface (like trees, metal objects, etc.).
It is great exercise!

RE: scared to swim?
Most danes are not swimmers. My first dane would have given his life for me, but sadly would have watched me drown.
I've heard of a few that would swim but that is not the norm.

RE: scared to swim?
Bailey absolutely hates, hates, hates the water! She even hates to go out in the rain...tip toeing around the yard like she was walking on nails. Bailey is even afraid of the hose..you'd think I was trying to kill her last summer when I tried to get her to drink from the hose. :9 Gave that up real quick! heehee In the summer, when it gets hot, I don't walk them or let them out for too long. I also put a fan on the floor to cool them. Ah, the life of a dog...

RE: scared to swim?
Jasper LOVES to swim, but Baron will have nothing to do with the water!! When we go for a walk out back in the back of our property, Jasper will plunge into all of the swamps and beaver ponds, and Baron is scared to death of them. He'll barely get his toes wet!!! I hope I can get him used to the water this summer, by taunting him in but likely he'll just sit on the shore and cry and howl for mommy to come back!!

RE: scared to swim?
Danes are like all dogs some love to swim and some don't. My Marlee girl swims better than her Golden Retriever brother. She swims like a fish, Bosco has lead in his butt. Both are great swimmers though. It's because of hiom she learned to swim. Marlee would watch Bosco jump in the pool with us and one day she just follwed him. Both love to swim but are only given access to the pool when my wife or I are in the pool. We do keep a kiddie pool fro them to play in whenever they want. I also own a Chocolate Lab who hates the water. She will not go any where near it. My other Dane Hercules is 6 months old, so I don't know if he is swimmer yet or not. The bottom line is not to force swimming on them, they either will or they won't.

RE: scared to swim? not Scout!!!!
I must say that I feel quite fortunate that Scout likes the water. When I got him, I was hoping that he would atleast tolerate the water, but much to my surprise he absolutely loves it. I think that first, he naturally likes the water, but second, I gradually introduced him to water. When he was 12-15 weeks, I would take him to small creeks and streams and let him romp around. The water was slow moving, only up to his chest, clear and most importantly, he could get out realy easily. When he was 6 months old he used to play with a yellow lab who taught him to jump off a pier into the water. I haven't met another dane who would do that... I have several old pictures of Scout swimming on his photo albulm.. I am actually about to post some new ones that we have taken in the last couple of weeks... Good luck with introducing your dog to the water.
