  • Will not pee at night..

Bella has always been choosy about when and where she pees and its always especially noticeable at night or in the rain but recently she refuses to pee before bed. She is drinking a normal amount and has a moderate activity level in the afternoons snd we usually take them out between 10 and 11. The last time she peed today was at 4:30. She's done this a few times before but it just seems impossible that she could be comfortable until SO wakes up at 6:00. Anything I can do? Just accept that she won't pee? She never has an accident in the house. She is also on proin (which i now think she may not need but i will elaborate later as i am posting frim my phine) could that be affecting how long she goes in between potties? This is just very frustrating!

Many dogs do hold it for 8-10 hours while their owners are at work with no ill effects, other than I've heard of increased risk of UTI or crystals. If you don't have a potty command, I would start building one. I would make sure to have a treat and lots of praise for the dog if it is not automatic for them to potty, and keep it up until it becomes automatic. You can also take the dog outside to pee, and then strictly to the crate if they don't go. Offer for them to go outside every half hour until peeing occurs, then throw a party for them and romp around inside. Don't mix potty time and play time outside. My kees mix used to only go twice a day as an adult and no more, and if you brought him outside again he wouldn't go (now he's old and wants to pee all the time). He also enjoyed holding it so he could mark on walks/go pee where other dogs have peed, and had to be encouraged by treats for a long time to pee in the dang yard.

My current foster is picky about peeing outside. She does not want to be in wet grass and would just stand there miserably, refusing to move or sniff, if it was wet when I took her out. I coaxed her to walk around with high value treats (cheese/hot dogs) and took her for walks in the rain so she didn't think it was so miserable. She also has a potty command which she generally obeys. It took a couple months but I am seeing improvement. It was wet tonight and not only did she go, but she saw something in the bushes and didn't immediately want to go back inside. Sometimes she doesn't pee for the last pee of the night but successfully holds it for the morning, I believe that is an 8 hour stretch. They go out four times a day because of my old man but she doesn't really care to be outside.

Both mine can hold it for 24 hours easy. If they dont want to pee, I dont force them. We go for three walks and two potty breaks every day, so they have the opertunity, and if they dont take it, well, its their bladder....

Toby will hold for 12 hours just about every night. Let him out at 7 and he will fall asleep on the couch. Put him in his crate at 11 or so and let him out at 7 am. He will let you know if he needs to go out when he goes to his crate but thats maybe once a month or so. When he lets it go in the morning, he lets it go

Our girl is able to hold it all night. Far longer than we were expecting at her age. If she does need to go out for some reason she'll let us know.

We have a related issue. She'll go out at night, but if it is raining more than a drizzle or soft shower, forget it. Only a dire need will get her outside. This becomes an issue any time of day if we're going to leave her for a while.

That has been the down side of the drought this summer. She was almost 5 months old before she encountered her first rain and has decided she does not like it.
