Titus has been doing this since I brought him home. He will lay his head in my lap and start kneading his paws like a cat or like a baby puppy trying to get milk...and usually do it until he falls asleep. Not really vigorously... more gentle. He has a plush soccer ball he will hold in his mouth and do it as well but most of the time it's while he's laying on the love seat with his head on my lap. Anyone else's puppies/dogs do this? Is he comforting himself maybe? I have to admit...it's super cute.

Briar Rose is 3 years old, and at night and in the mornings, she sucks on huge handfulls of her blankie (we call it her sucky, or her num-num) and she kneads as she sucks. She looks like a 150 pound baby. And her eyes roll backwards in her head, and she makes num num sounds like a baby suckling.
No, she wasn't taken away from her momma too early. We brought her home at just over 8 weeks old. Her breeder says that her grand-dam does the same thing, and a couple of the pups from that litter do it also !!!
On one hand this grown up huge dog is sucking away like a baby, and it's cute, but on the other hand....it IS just a bit odd. But she is such a good girl, and she loves her sucky time !!!

Yes, my 6 year old has done this since he was a pup and no, he was not taken away from his mom too young. It is just a comforting thing for him. He does this almost every morning as he waits for us to get up and get going for the day. He does it with only one particular soft, long hair plush toy shaped like a man and it can get so stinky and gross from all his sucking so I have to wash it often. I cannot find another anywhere and wish I could because that one is getting so raggedy and worn down.
ETA: I forgot about my other boy- he does this as well but he will do it sometimes in the evening when we all go to bed. He lays on his bed next to ours and there is another soft, fluffy bed by his that he likes to pick up with his mouth, fold it over and hold it with his two paws while he sucks on the fluffy part. He usually falls asleep that way. So cute!Last edited by Valentina; 09-25-2012, 08:09 PM.

I keep a supply of sucky blankies. Lucky for me, it's the real cheap "throws" from walmart. When they go on sale I can nab them for $3 a piece. I am NEVER without a few in reserve ! One to suck, one in the wash, another just in case...and one or two in the garage!!! It's worse than a kid with a blankie !
