  • When and how will the behavior change?

So this month has been a little busy for my family. We normally take Jax with us most places, but that hasn't been possible this month. So he has spent about 6-8 days/nights at daycare / kennel. I love my kennel...Jax gets playtime for about 8 hours a day with the other dogs. Many of you have probably read my previous post about his report cards..."high play energy," "still learning to interact with other play styles,"...now add "high play drive but can be too rough when he gets going."

The owner told me that he isn't bad, but he has a very high energy play style and doesn't seem to have an "off" switch. He LOVES everyone and loves to play with them all. She said that if he was ever there for more than 3 days, he'd probably have to have some extra down time to prevent him from possibly getting hurt. They do occassionally put him away to slow him down when he's playing too hard...about a 20 minute time out or so.

I watch him on video, and he does love to play, but he isn't always going. BUT, if anyone wants to play with him, he will play as long as the other dog plays back. He tries to play with others, but also seems to walk away when they aren't interested. On Sunday, I checked on him and he was doing zoomies through the yard! AND he had about 7 dogs zooming after him! I thought it was hilarious, but they gave him a time out to settle down a bit.

Sorry about the long post, but this is what I'm wondering...will Jax ever settle down with his play? He has always LOVED other dogs. When he was younger he would get super excited at the sight of another. Obedience classes were exhausting for me. Now that he's neutered, he can get a lot more free interaction with other pups. I love sending him to daycare and I thought he would settle down a bit since getting so much interaction; but, he doesn't seem to be settling down at daycare. Maybe he is even getting more excited? What do I do about this? What can I do? I trust daycare. I don't trust dog parks...so I don't really want to take him to them.

    Thanks for your help!

Did I miss how old Jax is ? Sorry, I don't recall ! I would say Briar just started....becoming more....settled....just after her third birthday. Spurts of energy, zoomies a couple times a day, will of course play with us, but she will often walk away sooner than we (human play partners) are "done". I think it just depends on the dog, but three seems to be her settleing point.

Jax is almost 10 months...oh my 3 is a LONG time away! He is actually not too crazy at home. He loves his short fetch time (gets over it quickly), loves to play with the cat, go for his nightly walk, and spend the rest of the time on the couch.

I'm more concerned about his interaction with other dogs...I thought that more interaction would equal less over-the-top excitement; but, he is just as excitable, if not more, when it comes to other dogs.
