  • He peed in the middle of my bed!

I will, of course be making some obvious changes, but I would love some outside theories as to why he would do this. He has never eliminated on the furniture even in the very beginning and he hasn't eliminated inside in a few months.

    Some background information:

I sleep on the sofa downstairs and haven't slept in that bed in years. The only people who have slept in the last year or so are my husband or my kids.

Up until about a week ago, Jackson had been crated at night. This past week, I decided to do a trial run of letting him sleep out of his crate. Today's situation is the first issue of any kind that we've had during this trial period.

There used to be a memory foam mattress topper on this bed. It was removed and thrown out after my kids started picking pieces out of it and eventually Jackson tore large chunks of it up.

A little over 3 weeks ago, my husband went on deployment. About a week after that, both of my kids started the school year. This is the first year for the youngest.

This morning specifically, I may have slept a bit later than I usually do. That is to say, I think it was a half hour; I'm certain it was not more than an hour. During at least part of that time, both of the kids were awake and playing quietly in their room. They had him up there playing with them even though they know and have been told many many many times that he is NOT allowed upstairs without a grown up for any reason.

I sleep on the sofa as the bed is too firm for me. The sofa is about 25 feet from the back door that he exits for all potty breaks. If he had made any sounds at all indicating that he needed to go out, I would have heard it. Even in the earlier stages of potty training, he would wake me up if he wanted to go out back - usually by whining or sniffing my face. Even now and even when I'm awake, if I don't jump up and go to the door when he sits down there and stares at me, he will pace between it and me until I let him out.

The last few things are that I have definitely been more busy than usual, but not so much that he's not getting much attention from me. I have probably been more crabby lately, but not a lot. We did recently have a play date with a spayed female. He seemed to have had the time of his life. He had a check up just over a week ago on the Friday before the one that just passed and was found to be in excellent health. And, finally, he is not neutered yet. His appointment is in 9 days, and yes, I am counting down the days.

Sorry for the long list. I'm just trying to include all of the things I can think of that might be contributing factors. Oh, in addition to the perfectly centered, giant urine puddle on my bed, he on the floor next to the bed and a little bit on a shirt of mine that had fallen off it's hanger in my closet. I feel like it's almost gauranteedly something that I did/am doing wrong or the changes going on around him or some combination thereof. I was wondering what you all thought was most likely to be the cause(s) in play here.

I'll be going back to night time crating, a more structured feeding/potty schedule, and thoroughly cleaning up the messes (until I am able to get the mattress out of the house, cleaning it as best I can and blocking his access to it are my only options.) but I'm sure that there is something more and/or better that I can do for him. Especially since I can think of several things that may have been at play in this right off the top of my head, there has got to be more I can do and probably easy changes at that. Anyway, sorry for yet another novel, and thanks for reading.

I'm sorry, I don't remember how old Jackson is? Keep in mind that danes are pups till they are at least two years old and often cannot be trusted out of their crates before that.

All of these things sound like good ideas. If you go back to using a crate you should see improvement. When I'm transitioning a dog to being "loose" instead of crated, I start with nights when I'm home from work and only trust them out at night when they are most likely to sleep. If they can handle that I might leave them for 20 minutes or so when I run over to the grocery store. Very slowly I work up to longer periods until I know they are going to be good. If you have a dog who sneaks off in front of you or brings you things like a paper towel he stole or maybe your hat or sock (talking about my own Einstein here ) they are obviously not going to behave while you're not there.

I do NOT believe dogs urinate on our beds because they want to spite us or because we did something wrong.

Did you see him do it? I'm curious to hear if he did it while sleeping or awake. Scarlett sometimes pees the bed when she's in a deep sleep, so I have to really monitor her water intake.

I only wish I had seen him do it so that I could have corrected him. I didn't find it until after the fact. I can't say for certain that it wasn't in his sleep, but I tend to doubt that it would have been. While there is always a possibility that he could have developed a uti or something since his check up a week ago, he doesn't sleep in human beds without a human in the bed with him. He'll leap up onto my bed when I'm in the room if I let him, but he just lays there and watches me until I leave the room then follows me out. It's possible, of course, but I really hope he isn't wetting in his sleep because that would mean that he probably has something medical going on. I'm crossing my fingers that that isn't the case.

Keep an eye on it, manage the environment as best you can, and see if it happens again (hopefully it doesn't). The big perfect circle puddle in Scarlett's case is pretty indicative of a deep sleep accident.

Missed the part about the poop. Just stay really on top of it and see what happens. Don't overthink it, just go back to basics.

He'll be 10 months old this coming Tuesday, so he'd still be a puppy even if he weren't a Great Dane. He still has that cute puppy face too .

I agree with you about dogs not doing things to be spiteful. I don't think that's what's going on at all. I guess I should clarify that I meant it's my fault in that, maybe it was an attempt to get my attention in a big way because I didn't notice when he tried in a smaller way. If that was the case, that's my fault imo. Afterall, he can't learn to speak human, but I can learn his language...so to speak. lol If I hadn't tried letting him sleep out of the crate at night, it probably wouldn't have happened. That's my fault. To me, if we are having a problem, I need to figure out what I need to change to solve it. Did that make any more sense, or was I just rambling again? I tend to ramble a lot.

Someone I forgot about who has and still does sleep on the bed is the cat. This would be the very same cat that Jackson is very interested in and with whom he tries and fails miserably to initiate play with. Could it have been that he was claiming her sleeping area as his territory?

I can't hold that against anyone. I tend to type long-winded posts. You're right, though, I'll have to go back to basics again. I only tried this so early to let him sleep closer to me because he loves being with me all the time. Plus, the one time we left the house and forgot to crate him - it was a quick trip to the mini mart litterally around the corner from our house - we came home and found that he had gone into his crate of his own accord and waited there for me to tell him he could come out. So, I thought that surely he would be fine out of his crate while he's sleeping at night. But, hey, at least I'm learning stuff for next time around.
