  • need some new trick ideas

our yard is getting redone this tues and that means the dogs cant go on it other then to potty until the grass is at a certain length so the roots have time to grow. so this means lots of walks in the park, and lots of clicker work on gross rainy days. but im out of ideas, i need some new things to teach them.

they both currently know: touch, spin around, come around, sit, shake with both paws, down, and shy (where they put their head between their paws).

Dyna also knows how to give a hug on command. and windsor can bow, and turn on a light switch.

i also bought a treat puzzle in case they get tired of the trick thing.

In the last tricks class we took we taught salute, achoo (dog takes tissue out of box, choosing colors (with paw), back up (from in front and in heel position), good night (dog pulls blanket over), take it, hold it, drop it.
One dog learned to ride a skate board.
I'm starting another tricks class this week so will have quite a few more.
We also took a rally obedience class and learned a ton there- all of the skills were excellent & the perch work was fantastic & really mentally taxing for them.

Perch work is a lot of fun and look into "101 Things To Do With a Box" which is in When Pigs Fly, by Jane Killion. Scarlett knows how to stand in a box with all four feet, just the front feet, and just the back feet. It sounds simple but it can be really challenging and fun.

For perch work, you can use an upturned dog bowl. They stand on it with their front feet and you can teach them to walk around the bowl using just their back legs. Kinda like a circus dog. It's fun!

"Bang, you're dead" is also a good one. Pushing a ball back and forth with their nose is fun.

Spinning around is fun to teach going in both directions. The cues we use are "wind" and "unwind" with a hand signal.

I'm currently working on teaching Scarlett to piaffe using a target stick but Ive gotten lazy with it and haven't practiced in awhile.

High five, shake, and wave are all the same behavior but it changes based on your hand position. If my palm is pointing straight up, Scarlett smacks it with her paw. If my palm is down and open, she puts her paw in. Wave is two or three swipes of the paw.

I remembered that video you posted and after recently reading When Pigs Fly (I swear-it was like Jane knew Lucas personally!!!) I wondered if that is where that idea came from. Lucas has not put his feet in the box yet. But hey, he is touching my hand and watching me so I can't complain!

One trick that is easy to teach and people get a kick out of that my biddable boxer and I do is "Police raid." I say "Police raid" and Apollo jumps up against the wall and stays and lets me pat him down to see if he's "packing." It's easy to teach with a lure and it always cracks up guests.

So far Tucker's arsenal of tricks/obedience include:
                sit
                stay
                down
                come
touch paw (left and right..depends of which hand is down)
                twirl (spin)
circle (circles me, whatever way I point)
                close the door
roll over (but only onto his side)
speak (not a good idea unless you teach quiet also)
                crawl (army crawl).
                watch me
                wait

Lola does "yoga". We just added a cue when she stretches (face down, butt up) and now she can do it on command.

Also "side" (flops over) and "belly" (lays on her back so we can rub her belly).

A game you could do inside is FIND. We learned it in training with Ayla. You put treats in plastic Easter eggs and hide them, then you say find it, and the dog runs around and finds them. My lab especially loves this game, and can even open the eggs herself to get her treat. I am thinking I am going to start this game again with my boxer, because I am always looking to do enrichment with him, and he is such a fast learner. It did not work terribly well with Reilly, or especially Ayla, because neither of them are very food motivated.
Chris, Wife to Dave, and Mom three human teenagers.
Also mom to Tori (11 yo Lab), , Ayla (2 yo brindle dane), Milo (2 yo boxer), Killian (4 week old iw pup who is still with his breeder and mommy) 3 kittens, 2 horses, multiple reptiles, 7 fainting goats, 25 chickens, and 2 pot bellied pigs, all of whom make life great!
RIP CARLIE 2/09-2/11 & REILLY 10/4/08-11/20/12, best friends together forever now.
