Im gonna give as much info as I can think of here. I have potty trained several dogs in the past and never had issues like I'm having with our 10 week old Dane Delilah. We picked her up first Tuesday of this month. From day one I have taken her outside every hour to potty. When she goes outside I praise, say potty great and click. We also attempt to teach ringing a bell when she needs to go out. Our yorkie does it, so would be nice to have them both do it. Delilah pees in the house on a regular basis and it's starting to get under my skin. I have zero time to react to the signs she is going to do it. At times she will literally wake up walk to the middle of the floor and squat within 5-10 seconds. Sometimes she will stop mid play and just squat. No sniffing nothing just straight to pee. And it's very short time frames between instances. One morning she peed 3 times in less than an hour. And the bell..... Sometimes she will ring it and then pee next to the door right after ringing it, or she will pee on the floor and then ring it..... Pooping is a different story. She will ring the bell and wait to go out to poop with no problems. Only been one poop in the house. We are making no progress at all. And it seems when she drinks it goes right through her, and she can't seem to get enough water. Also I think she has a slight case of puppy vaginitis due a light yellow/white discharge. Goes to get Tuesday to be sure. Anyone got any ideals?

No issues with house training here either so can't help that route...
UTI or possible puppy diabetes. The high water intake would raise an eyebrow to me.
I'm glad to hear that you're going to take her to the vet. I would think if she was using the bell that she is trying to let you know at least some of the time so you're heading in the right direction with that.
Good luck!sigpic

I have seen tethering mentioned several times on DOL. Maybe you could start tethering her to you so she can't get too far away and you have time to pick her up and take her outside the second she seems like MAYBE she might need to potty. Also, the very second you notice her waking up pick her up and take her outside. Don't even let her get to her feet to walk around (for as long as you can at least!)Love is being owned by a Great Dane.sigpic

Are you crate training?
I am having no potty training issues, but I've heard others have great success with using a crate to help the training along.
I think the basic idea (you'll have to research more to be sure), is the puppy sleeps in the crate, when it's time to wake up, you bring her outside and she goes potty then it's breakfast time, then back out to potty, then back in the crate for an hour..then let her out to go potty and play for a bit, then back in the crate until next potty break. Repeat through the day. I'm pretty sure that's how it works. The idea is that dogs generally wont pee/poo in their crate. My little Bogartsigpic

We crate in a sense that she spends time we are not home or sleeping in the crate. She has had zero accidents in the crate. It's funny that literally the day after I posted she did a 100x better today. We had two accidents today, and bell was rang to go out a bunch of times. I actually took her out like 5 times in one hour at one point today. She peed a little everytime except the last time she poo'd. It was like a light bulb came on in her head overnight or something.

Glad to hear there is progress. I would still check for the UTI, especially with the vaginitis.
That's house training for you though.... it's like one day a light bulb goes on and then a few weeks down the road you have this epiphany where you're like... wow, wait a second... there haven't been accidents for weeks!
Keep up the patience It's worth the effort to not have to clean up after them inside. Thankfully Moose came house trained and Nitro only took a few weeks but I got her when she was just over 4 months. I've heard horror stories though... so sending you only the best wishes!sigpic

I agree that you've been expecting a bit much from such a young puppy, I'm glad to hear she did so much better today than she has been with you letting her out more frequently When they're that young their bladders are small and they haven't mastered the concept of holding it yet.
I agree with the crating when you can't watch her, and tethering her to you, that way she can't sneak off and have an accident. Hopefully a vet check will rule out a UTI.
One thing I did with my girl was keep her with me at all times, she really didn't get crated much unless we went somewhere and for her meals, I was a stay at home mom when we got her so I was able to spend a lot of time with her.
She slept on the bed with my husband and I from the time she came home (not saying you should do this lol), so if she woke up in the night I could get her out right away. Thankfully she didn't need to go out in the middle of the night for long, I'm pretty sure she slept throught the night by about 10 weeks or so.
The other thing I did was to take her out everytime she woke from a nap, as soon as she was done eating and/or drinking, and when she was up playing she went out every fifteen minutes or so. As she got older the time stretched out accordingly.
It sounds as if your girl is trying, just hasn't mastered the idea (or her bladder) yet. Are you going outside with her to potty (on leash) or just letting her out?
Taking her out on leash to a spot you want her to go at every time will help her get the idea faster (so she doesn't think it's play time), and you can praise like a fool when she's done! Also clean up any spots with a cleaner like Nature's Miracle made especially for getting rid of the urine smell, that way she won't smell her accident and think it's okay to go there again.
Good luck!Last edited by Mirababy; 09-17-2012, 06:14 PM.
