  • Daycare Report Card

Jax enjoyed two nights and days at daycare / boarding. His report card said...."He has a high energy play style and is still learning how to interact with other dogs."

I'm pretty sure that's a nice was of saying "Jax is a pain in the butt!"

Funny, I think Lola's first report card meant the same thing..."She's a party animal"

Sounds like Jax might have gotten a "time out".

As long as he doesn't get detention, I think you are in the clear.

LOL Really I think it was nice. Having had my 3 Danes in daycare for years - high energy and learning how to interact with other dogs is quite normal. I think that is a great report card.

I could have used that when doing Mid-Term progress reports for my college students!

A backyard breeder (BYB) is someone who has been deemed not a reputable breeder.

A "Responsible Breeder" supports their buyers, supports their own dogs, and supports the lives of any fututre puppies by having (and keeping up with) all the appropriate health testing suggested by the GDCA.

I looked at it again and it says 'stillI learning to interact with different PLAY STYLES of other dogs' lol. That's nice too. My boy is a handful!!!! And it does fit perfectly to children too!

                Love it!

He has two more stays coming up...we'll see

Does anyone elses dane LOVE the smaller dogs??? Jax would rather play with the smaller dogs, even in the big dog area.

Our late Dane grew up with our two Yorkshire Terriers. He LOVED every little dog in the neighborhood but wouldn't have anything to do with the other big guys. I don't think he ever realized that big dog in the mirror was him LOL!!

Cas actively dislikes male dogs over about 50 lbs (we actually had a behaviourist in yesterday to help us address this) but he LOVES all little dogs and will lay down politely and wait for them to come to him. Which is sad because the behaviourist has made a 'no meeting ANY dog he doesn't know well already' rule, so no little dogs for him right now.

Zia absolutely ADORES little dogs! It's funny how you can just see the hearts in her eyes! I'm super cautious though.

I should try this lay down and wait for them behavior...getting jax to sit for greeting is a chore itself, so the laying down to play may take a while!

Lucas lays down for other small dogs as well, it's so cute, he does that lay, scoot thing. He always plays at the appropriate level for the dog. He has excellent social skills with other dogs, he knows just what to do and when to defuse a situation or keep it from escalating, when and what to ignore and when to take a stand in a way that is not inappropriate, and is just enough eye contact/assertive stance/growl/turn and face to get his point a crossed with no further incident. He will not tolerate being mounted, and he doesn't like other dogs stealing his food (they can come close-just keep your nose out or you'll be chased off), and his will get his spots, even if he has to lay on top of another dog, and if they growl or snap about being misplaced (or hurt from being laid on) he completely ignores it and settles down in his spot. I think it's because his previous owner had about 8 dogs, and would catch strays and try and re-home them. They all lived outside, so I think Lucas knows more about living in a pack of dogs than he knows about living in a human pack. But on leash, don't get me started.......

There are worse problems to have of course. I think he needs separations to cool down, and not get to start playing in an over-excited state to begin with (reward calm behavior with play) and it will get better has he matures and you continue your consistency with the training methods you are using. I love Jax's enthusiasm, and I'm glad he gets to play with other dogs since he enjoys it so much.

Just imagine the opening scene from the Simpsons where Bart is at the chalkboard but replace him with a GD:
"I will not get the zoomies after my caretaker gives me a bath. I will not get the zoomies after my caretaker gives me a bath. I will not get the zoomies after my caretaker gives me a bath. I will not get the zoomies after my caretaker gives me a bath...."
