  • Aggressive Great Dane, NEED HELP

My Great Dane CLifford will be a year old Christmas Day. I have often said he is stubborn and has a human personality. He has been great towards everyone and other animals until the last week. Yesterday I went to let him out and the neighbors collie got loose and was playin in the yard. Clifford was ok and was playin with him until i decided to attempt to catch the collie to bring it home. CLifford then positioned himself between me and the collie. All of a sudden just before i was goin to reach the collie Clifford attacked him. It didnt hurt him but i had to grab his tail and pull him to stop the attack. Then earlier since I have pneumonia we left Clifford in for a bath and to hang out with me. We also have a german shephard. My b/f let Zeus (the german shephard) in after about an hour and all of a sudden Clifford is attackin him in my kitchen!!!! I do not understand what is going on with Clifford. He used to love all animals and would play with them, now he attacks them all. ANd for some reason we cannot get him house broke. Will gettin him fixed stop this behavior? What should i do?

hi i would have him nutered asap.also where did you get him you should call the breeder,to ask if he or she has ever seen this in there dogs, there really are alot of byb with bad temperments sorry to say this but so true this breed is way to big to be aggresive they can kill a small dog in a second.and really injure or kill a large dog be very careful with this behavior.

    good luck

What is byb? The lady i bought him off of is not a breeder. She had 2 fawn danes that accidently got pregnant so there is not much of a history. I just dont understand why he snapped in a days time.

she is a byb back yard breeder.no test do not care about temperment heath etc there is no such thing as a accident.when you are a good breeder you know when your bitch is ready to breed.i bet she charged you for this pup even if it was a accident.sorry people that do not care about the breed really pisses me off.

you have your hands full i am sorry that a byb took advantage of you.

It might be possible that Clifford got the wrong message when you went after the collie. He probably thought he'd join you in yard patrol.

I'm sure his manly hormones aren't helping either. They get bigger than their bridges sometimes.

Now, now. Let's not jump. This flare up of temperment could just be situational or hormonal and not genetic. We do not know.

that is wat i tought of at first with the collie. But i cant explain the fightin inside the house with Zeus, however Zeus and Clifford both cant stand the other gettin all the attention.

Right now, Jacobsmom is asking for insight and help with a serious problem. The only dog we've ever had that fought with the others in our house, we had for 11 months and she was 7 years old. We knew no history on her but she was the sweetest, most loving dog to us. However, she was unpredictable with our other dogs and would turn on one and she was brutal. We finally had to admit defeat and had her put to sleep last month. RIP Cassie.
I obviously don't have any answers but I hope someone has some good suggestions.

IMO it is possible that first incident wasn't an aggression - I have 2 dogs, and when they both are off-leash, if I'm calling one and she is not coming right away, 2nd dog will go and get her. They don't fight but older one usually growls. Maybe your dane was "helping" you to get collie?
And with GS - did you see when they started to fight? Maybe something provoked it- like toy or treat on the floor?

<<Will gettin him fixed stop this behavior? What should i do?>>

                          Get him fixed today!
Ive posted this at least 100 times. Intact males over 9 months old have a high probability of developing dog aggression. Almost all breeds from the working group are like that.

If you wait too long these hormonal tendencies will become behaviorial problems that neutering wont even help.

Make your appt today to neuter and start working on NILF! Neutering will help, but reinforcing proper behavior by obedience training is necessary too.

I agree with Carolyn. I've had aggression issues with Damage since we got him at 6 weeks old. We bought him from a miller and have heard horror stories about some of the other pups this guy has sold. Damage is 9 months old and we just got him neutered last week. It'll take a couple of weeks for the testosterone to get out of his system, but I'm already seeing signs that he's calming down. Get your boy neutered as soon as possible to avoid any more encounters. Neutering also helps with health issues. Also the NILF works as well.....training, training, training! Also buying from a reputable breeder is a giant step forward. Research and training are the keys to a happy healthy dog and a happy family.

When is the right age to neuter? I thought with danes you should wait till they were close to one year to keep them from being feminized. We got our first dane cut at around 10 months and were planing on waiting to get Sheldon cut till he made a year but if it should be earlier we will do that. Sheldon is almost 4 months now.
