  • Doing great in class, but....

As always, Ansel is doing wonderful in class. :7 He has great recall on the commands and is very well behaved. Last night we were working on making them wait for permission to go through doors as to save them from darting into a busy street, etc. We were working in a hallway (same place we worked before) and were using a bathroom. Well Ansel was absolutely PETRIFIED of the door. It was all I could do to get him to go by that door. I didn't force him, he came with me, but he was cowering and wouldn't take the treat I was trying to give him. Any ideas on why that would be?

Typical Dane attitude. It may have been because there was so much focus on the doorway, or the bathroom if she finds that scary. Just move to another doorway and act normally.

Ok, thanks! I was working with him on the door out of the building and he did fine. What a weirdo! LOL

Be prepared to be entertained by random apprehension of objects.
Danes as they grow go through fear stages and will suddenly think a random object is way scary! Just act normally (well you can laugh, just don't baby!) and they move past it eventually.

That's so funny! I was careful not to baby him, (I have heard that babying them reinforces the scared behavior)I was just trying to get him to do the activity. Thanks for the response.

Could he have gotten his tail closed in that door at some time?

Isn't it funny what they deem a "threat"? We are going through a phase where recycling bins at the end of driveways are super scary monsters! (Even though she has seen them EVERYDAY on our walks for the past 4 months...) :f Mostly if they are upside down. Last month it was yellow road signs that are lower to the ground, like at the end of a drive way/ turnabout.

Jade is almost 4 and she still will act like a baby with some things. It's just ridiculous- tail tucked, goes to her bed and pouts over something like a can of paint for a house project. We always just encourage her to investigate the offending item and not coddle her. I think this is just one of the ways Danes show they're nothing but big babies!

I can't have anything large (box, dog food bag, etc) anywhere that Sawyer can see it while he's eating. I gets very upset when anything is in view of his food dish. If there's something scary elsewhere in the kitchen he'll go as far as using a different doorway to avoid whatever is bothering him.

Martha, You would have thought there would be a reason for his fear, but he had never been by that door before. It is rather funny this 100 lb dog scared of random things. He is such a weirdo and I love him so! Wouldn't change him for the world.

Amanda, how old is Ansel now?
How is Ansel when you walk him?
Dakota is almost 16 wks and I have been working with her walking to my side consistantly and I must tell you she's bad at it! :9
She also had her first class last week and she did okay.

He's 6 1/2 months now. He's doing fairly well walking with me (as long as he wants to LOL). But honestly he does very well, and I think it gets better as you go. Just remember to have fun and it makes all the difference. We have a blast in class, so it's a great bonding time. Let me know how your classes go.

LOL Thankfully our classes are on Mondays. It is amazing how fast they grow isn't it? I'm thinking about starting a then and now thread because we found a pic of Ansel right after we got him home and he was shorter than the couch. (I honestly didn't remember him being that small!) Plus I love puppy pics.

That's a good idea. Put him in front of the couch in the same spot for every picture and you'll see how much he is growing
