  • Need To Find The STRONGEST CRATE AVAILABLE

We don't want to get rid of our dane. We love him. Unfortunately, he's got seperation anxiety and he's terrified whenever anyone raises their voice. He's DESTROYED two crates, and I can't find a tough enough crate for him. He's now tethered in the basement while we're at work, since he's been destroying the house on a regular basis, and we're at our wits end. Anyone know where I can purchase a reliable HEAVY DUTY crate? I need honest answers. Replies with suggestions OTHER than where to find a heavy duty crate are appreciated but not needed.

I'm not sure what kind of crates you had before (or how big you Dane is now), but I purchased mine at Petco (not too high-tech) and my 7 1/2 month boy is a monster. He has yet to get out and trust me he'll bite, push and throw his weigh around in that one until he's so tired he lays down to nap. I bought the biggest one they carry, but you can special order bigger ones (petco.com)..... hope that helps!

What sort of crates has he destroyed?

What about the standalone kennel kits? They make usually a 4x6 or 6x6 square out of cyclone fence panels with a top/bottom?

        I would encourage you to buy a "regular" kennel 6ft high x 6ft long x 4 (or 6)ft wide.
You can set this up in your basement/garage/1st floor of your home, secured on 2 side (as in a corner) for a secure hold to the wall.

PS to ad: if at all possible put this next to a window so he has something to do/look at while home alone all day.

Where would I find this? Are you talking about the chain link kind? He rips regular crates apart, and I can't put a 6x6 anywhere upstairs. Wife won't have it.

I would agree that i don't think a crate will work for y'all. Especially if he's already destroyed 2. I found this online the other day while I was browseing. It may or may not be useful info for you. Good luck!

RE: Need To Find The STRONGEST CRATE AVAILABLE

Have you tried a "colossal" crate made by Midwest homes for pets? This crate is about 54" long and I believe 48" high, our female had seperation anxiety issues also.
As for the chain link or 6ft high kennels that the other members are referring to, most of the time these can be purchased at a local farm supply store (that is depending on where you live) but you can also take a look at what they are talking about on Midwest's website.

                Hi James,
Crystal, in the email above, gave you a link to what I was talking about. I understand that your boy has chewed/ripped thru crates, and very well could tear thru the chainlink, but there isnt alotta other options.
                Best of luck,
                Carolyn

RE: Need To Find The STRONGEST CRATE AVAILABLE

Ever talk to your vet about it? Since he's probably hurting himself struggling so much, I wonder if he'd be a candidate for mild medication? Don't know anything about this, so just raising the topic, not suggesting.

RE: Need To Find The STRONGEST CRATE AVAILABLE

I feel your pain, my Pyr was never successfully crate trained. He could destroy a colossal crate in a matter of minutes. Luckily he only destroyed one bedroom as a puppy (and I mean completely destroyed EVERYTHING in there in about 2 hours one X-mas eve.) Much older now, and with "Pyr-proof" fencing we don't have to worry about him getting out of the yard.
I've had rescue dogs here with serious seperation anxiety, they can easily get out of a regular 6' X 6' (or 10' X 10')and will generally tear their faces up pretty well during the process. I had a female Neapolitan here a couple of years ago almost lose an eye tearing through chain link. I would suggest finding a welder to build you a crate, or to go ahead and invest in something like this:
                    http://www.optionspluskennels.com/silverspecs.htm
The lady here who does Pyr rescue that I foster for has a guy who has built her a few crates. I don't know how he does it but they're amazing. Imagine the 12 edges of a box, all 12 are about 3 inches thick and the "wire" is welded to them. She's never had a dog escape from one of them.
I wish you much luck and hope you can find a soultion to this. It's so frustrating when they don't understand that you're coming home.

RE: Need To Find The STRONGEST CRATE AVAILABLE

Check leerburg.com for the aluminum crates. They are expensive (500) but I seriously doubt he could get out of one of those. I just saw them the other day browsing the site, I'm not into k-9 training but if you dig that site has a wealth of information.

Those are obviously not dane size but if you email the site owner he might be able to point you in the right direction of finding taller ones.
