Anyone out there with some good tips on how to start training a deaf dane? My 4 year old is new to me from the shelter I adopted her 2 weeks ago and she is settling in well. Although very skittish so unsure how to start the training. Maybe I should wait longer? Any thoughts? Thanks all...Debz =)

RE: Deaf Dane training for 4 year old (shelter Dane)
Congrats on your special new family member! :e)
Here are a few sites to start with:
http://www.deafdogs.org/training
http://www.greatdanerescueinc.com/white_danes.htm
http://www.greatdanerescueinc.com/deafdogs.html
http://www.chromadane.com/whites.htm (health/genetic info)
http://www.gracieland.org/DaneRescue/ (basic info)
Oz's page: http://home.earthlink.net/~critter_mom/oz1yr.htm
"Living with a Deaf Dog" by Susan C. Becker
"Amazing Gracie" by Dan Dye & Mark Beckloff (great biography)
I'm sure I've left some out, but these will get you started. IMO, training a deaf dog is no harder than training a hearing dog, the methods are just different. Pick your hand signs now and use them consistently, she'll catch on faster than you expect. You may want to consider using one-handed signs, it makes things alot easier when trying to hold a leash and communicate at the same time, LOL. Don't rule out group obedience classes either...Oz is deaf/blind and completed several levels of regular/hearing obedience...we just used touch signals instead of voice commands. Most instructors are willing to work with special needs pups, just talk to them before enrolling.
Congrats again! Your girl is lucky to have found you! :*
