I think the two fawns (the one handled by the woman in the yellow jacket and Monroe) are incredible dogs. I didn't get such a good look at the other dog in the top 3, work was distracting me from paying 100% attention.

I was surprised Jefe got dismissed before the final judging round, but he is really young. I hope they bring him back next year or the year after.

That was super fun to watch. Good luck to them in the final group!

I guess I just don't know a lot about ears but how was the Harl considered if the ears weren't standing? Is it a poor crop or does that just happen from time to time?

Ears that don't stand are not penalized in the ring. Sometimes they just don't stand, despite appropriate taping, especially if the crop is really long. Most show crops are pretty long. Asaah has an ear that does not stand, and her breeder is very experienced and taped consistently.

I wonder why Danes never seem to place in the group and why other breeds of dog consistently do. Just popularity?

I was a tad pissed that Henry didn't even get a 2nd look. The judge literally walk right by him and didn't even glance. Henry is a specimen of the breed. I did really like the Samoyed though, he moved so nicely.

The giant breeds don't ever seem to win the group, regardless of how great they are.

So proud of Team Henry for representing the breed so well!!

Danes, Mastiffs & Saint Bernards have all been entered since 1877 (139 of the show's 140 years) and none of them have ever taken Best in Show. But Newfoundlands took it twice (most recently in 2004). Danes have taken first in Group 5 times, most recently in 1983. There really does seem to be a bias against giant dogs

I was happy to see the Harls so well represented among the Danes. I was thinking maybe Danes would do better if we split them into color families like the cocker spaniels -- maybe that would double our chances!

Dangit I was rooting for Natural Ears or that one giant harle led by the bald man in the suit. Never got his number.
That's Bookie! We were rooting for him over here. I saw him and his handler posted on some news page on FB today. Gah, I just want to smooch his face.

Yeah I have to agree I think Henry got stiffed. Well at least a German short hair pointer won. I had one as a pet growing up.

I've always wondered why this isn't a thing. It makes sense (to me) that solids should compete against solids and colored/patterned dogs should compete against colored/patterned dogs.

I wonder why ACSs have color groups and almost no other breed does.

Because when the breed standard was written, the genetics of merles and harls were not fully understood yet. The parent club was trying to "rid" the breed of the undesired merle color. So they excluded the color thinking if it could not be shown, it would not be bred and would eventually go away.

Now that we know all harls are genetically merles and just happen to have the modifier which whites out all the merle - we know we cannot rid the breed of merles without losing harls right along with them.

As such, it is thought that merles will be added to the list of accepted show colors at some point in the future. It is not an easy task to undertake to get that change made so it will take quite some time.
