I was looking at safe chews for our new puppy and I was wondering if Elk antlers and bully sticks are safe for a small puppy or are they for adult dogs??

They are just fine for a puppy.... my rule of thumb is to always buy them big enough to where the puppy or dog cannot swallow. Once they become small in my house, they get thrown away. I also prefer deer antlers over elk b/c they seem to be a little heftier and not as soft so they last longer... With the elk, I also find pieces all over my carpet which I hate. I'm not a fan of bully sticks b/c they smell TERRIBLE! Tried it once and my dogs LOVED them, but we just couldn't take the smell.sigpicDoggie mom too:

You cab buy odorless bully sticks, but they're more expensive. Also, while Gracie loves bully sticks, we found that she could devour one in about 20 minutes, and then would give her the runs. We prefer antlers.sigpic

I bought Bae a deer antler and she loves it. She has had it for months now and there are barely any markings on it from all her chewing. We bought a small one from petsmart because we weren't sure if she'd like it so we didn't want to order the big one online and spend a lot of money if she didn't like it. Next time we buy one it will be the biggest one I can find and I'll know it is worth the money.sigpicBae and Chip hanging out together for the first time.

I get the jumbo bully sticks from bestbullysticks.com. I've found that the regular ones don't smell, especially if you keep them in the freezer. I've bought cheaper ones from the pet store and they smell awful. You get what you pay for I guess. I have some deer antlers from my dad (ones he found and some from deer he got himself). I also got a giant split elk antler from chewy.com that Finn really loved when he was a puppy. I like the elk ones, I think they're easier on their teeth. I've never had a problem with pieces coming off. I also have 2 water buffalo horns that my two really like. You have to get ones that are really thick at the base so they don't get splintery.sigpic
