There is getting to be a lot of fund raising and dog/puppy sale and rehoming posts despite warning that they aren't allowed.. don't people ever read the rules? I would delete them if I could

This bugs me too... not just about danes but in general. Saw someone post about a week ago "I need a kitten, NOW. Please help." THATS A GREAT ATTITUDE. Before I could even suggest rescue they already had a new kitten from a pet store. And before that I helped someone rehome their ferret that they apparently didn't have time for anymore. Not a week later they had a brand new baby sugar glider...? People are ***holes.
I also want to add.... I really dislike that the cover photo of the DOL page was recently updated to a dane with a prong collar on. I'd love if this was changed. There is no reason to ever use a prong collar on any dog. This sets a bad example for dane owners.Last edited by Tiva; 07-11-2015, 12:26 PM.sigpic

A prong collar, like jerking leash corrections, is a form of positive punishment. I don't advocate using positive punishment to train any animal because there are better and more humane alternatives available that are scientifically proven to be just as effective. As far as I'm concerned its not better than using a shock collar. And actually possibly worse because of the thyroid stimulation.sigpic

I have been a trainer for over 40 years.. I believe in positive training and teach positive training.. with that being said I also have studied a lot of the various training aids and their uses and am not close minded to the fact that properly fitted and properly used they do have a place in training for some dog/handler combinations.. not all things work for all dog/handler combos. Also as a vet tech pretty much as long as I've trained I also know the issues that incorrectly fitted & used training collars, harnesses and even regular collars can cause issues.
Nothing is clear cut, black/white, etched in stone.

I am a member of the closed group - https://www.facebook.com/danesonline?fref=ts
and I am wondering why people from the group cannot post to the wall directly? I am part of a swiss mountain dog facebook group which is also closed but posts go right into everyone's feed. It has to be the absolute best resource for swissy info. People can post their questions and such and get instant feedback from the group members. They also do a weekly picture theme which is fun. It is very interactive group and I have found it very helpful. I keep forgetting the dane group because the posts are so infrequent.sigpic

Positive punishment, which Tiva referenced, most certainly *does* include the use of a prong collar no matter the circumstance, dog, situation, owner etc.
Here is a site discussing positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, and negative punishment. I assure you it is confusing, as I remember it taking a while to sink in when I was taking my Psych class!
