  • Puppys nose...

I got my first great dane about a week ago. When I look at pictures of the majority of great dane puppies, they seem to have shorter wider noses. However, my little girl has a long skinny nose. She has AKC papers and I met both her beautiful large parents, yet im wondering why her face looks different than most that I see...

Titan had one of those noses as well when he was a pup.....

however in the last few months his lips have really grown in..

so I wouldn't get too discouraged just yet... she still has some potential to get the lips!

AKC papers don't necessarily mean a dog is well-bred, just that both parents are the same breed. Were the parents shown? Health-tested (OFA, not a vet check)? Did the breeder carefully choose an appropriate match for the female based on her strengths and weaknesses or did they just breed the two that they have because it was convenient? Breeds only exist and look a certain way because some people work very hard to maintain that. If that work does not go into a breeding, then you start to lose that breed type (what makes a Dane look like a Dane and not a lab, mastiff, or greyhound). If your breeder did not do any showing or health testing, they are probably not responsible breeders, often referred to as back yard breeders. Your girl may look a little different because that hard work did not go into the breeding. That's not to say there is anything wrong with her, but many people breed their dogs when they really shouldn't be bred. There are so many dogs in shelters and rescues that only the best of any breed should be bred to maintain the breed. You already have her, so don't worry about what she looks like, just enjoy her.

Also for future reference, check out the ABCs to purebred puppy buying links to the left. Good info there on what to look for in a good breeder if you ever want to get another purebred puppy.
