  • Chest Freezers

All of you raw feeding folk:

I'm looking at buying a chest freezer (considering I have almost 200# of meat coming in for Apollo), and I'm having a little bit of trouble.

I'd like to buy one that allows me to comfortably fit that amount of meat in it without stressing, and the Sears lady recommended I go with a 7.2 cubic foot freezer. Do you guys think this is going to be big enough?

I found one on sale for $170 so as soon as I have some validation, I'm going to spring and buy it before it goes off sale.

    Thanks!

I'd go one size bigger than you think you need.

The 7.2 already actually is one size bigger than I thought I'd need.. I was thinking I'd only need a 5 until the lady told me to go with the 7.2..

I believe we have a 5 cubic foot freezer. We get about 100 lbs of beef from my parents every year. That fits in there plus some ice cream and a few frozen pizzas. If you have the space and money, I'd get the next size up. Mom and dad have a big chest freezer, an upright freezer, plus 2 refrigerators with freezer space and it was always full. You always need more than you think you do!

Awesome, thank you! I'll more than likely buy the 7.2 cubic foot chest freezer then. I have an upright fridge with freezer space if I absolutely need it too.

I even bought a vacuum sealer just to get maximum squishage so everything will fit!

Thank you guys for the advice!

I'm wondering what size freezers everyone has?

We have a big upright that is about 20-22sf. It's old and there is no size on it. That is for the dogs. We also have another upright that is about 15sf for us because we get 1/2 a pig and 1/4 cow every year. The dog fridge will hold about 500#.

Not sure what size mine is in cf, but it's about four feet wide (normal height and depth for a chest freezer) and I can fit #250-300 in it no problem. I have a little 2.7 cf freezer for people food and over run on big dog food orders.

                  Katelyn,

We have 2 freezers that are part of French-door refrigerators, 1 upright freezer, and a 5 CF chest freezer. The chest freezer was the one we got for raw feeding - TOO SMALL. Already regretting not getting the 7 CF. Definitely do not get the 5 unless you have no space for larger.

I am stuck now...I want to order about 200-220lbs of food and am not sure if I will have enough space lol. Rephrase - I WONT have enough space. I tried floating the idea of an upgrade - but since this one is about 6 weeks old - that did not go over well

I won't lie, I was so stressed out over this decision last night, I poured myself a glass of vodka. Haha down the hatch and I am now the proud new owner of a 7.2 cubic foot chest freezer

Thank you all for the help. I sure hope this thing is big enough!

[emoji23] I am not even joking, I must have sat and stared at the 'submit order' button on and off for at least 2 hours before I got some 'help.'

Well, after a ridiculous amount of chaos from Best Buy after they tried sending me home with a half-crushed freezer, Apollo finally has his own freezer! Yay! Haha excuse the awkwardly colored floor; these apartments carpets change colors as you walk on them [emoji19]

Will do! It's a 7.2 cubic foot freezer. And it's pretty darn big.. I could probably fit 4-5 Apollos in it. So I'm sure it'll be good to hold at least 300lbs! Will take a picture when I get it filled up! [emoji4] I tried to use the coke can for reference [emoji23]
