  • petsmart crop?!!?

so Harlee and I went to get her weighed at 8 months and a lady that worked their that works in grooming chatted my ear off about how much she loves great Danes and that they rarely come in and then asked me the most odd question, she asked me if I was going to get Harlees ears cropped, Well she is 8 months old I was thinking so a bit to old lol, I just looked at her and said no we are not going to crop her ears because it would take away from her goofy personality.

You can't expect everyone to know everything. I never mind questions like that, it gives me the opportunity to educate someone about the dog / breed.

Well...I've worked at and managed pet stores for almost 35 years and I've been trained extensively over the years in both pet nutrition and pet care. Plus, I've gone to a ton of seminars on my own covering every aspect of pet care. So not everyone who works in pet shops are clueless. True, all my experience is with stores dealing almost exclusively with holistic foods and higher end products and not the box stores, but still, to group everyone together is really not right IMO.

When I got Peanut she was 16 weeks old and my dad, completely serious, asked when would her ears start to stand up. He thought they naturally stood on their own!

We just had a Dane come through our rescue that had uncropped ears but they stood straight up just like they would if they had been cropped and taped. It made me wonder if someone taped his ears up without cropping. He was a really cute mantle fawn with merle markings but the ears made me laugh.

*SIIIIIGH* This petsmart employee was being friendly and engaging you in conversation, that is her job. Now I realize that to us there is nothing better then a great dane, but maybe we need to realize that there are 161 breeds accepted by the akc, and great danes are not at the top of the most popular list. I have met so many people that have never seen a dane in real life. Just because this woman works in a petstore, this doesn't mean she knows every little thing about every breed. Lord knows most vets don't even know what they should about giant breeds in general. I realize I sound defensive, I work in a petstore too. While I know a good deal more about different breeds then most (I'm a groomer, I kinda have to), that doesn't mean I expect everyone else too. Maybe you should learn to take these opportunities to help educate the general public.

We love Petsmart and Petco. It's a perfect dog friendly place to socialize with people and other animals. The fish are just the best... Phineas follows them with his head and has a great time. Plus we always find awesome treats to pick up for Phineas and the gang.

Our Petsmart employees know Phineas by name and they have been a wonderful help in him practicing the seperation anxiety part of the CGC test. They stand with him and we walk a few aisles away for a minute or two. They check his ears and his teeth. Phineas doesn't have an anxious bone in his body from all this stranger touch.

Do they know everything? Naw... but I find most are good souls who just love dogs.

I also work in a pet store, but it's a small independent store. I know more about training and nutrition than most of the people I work with, but it amazes me how many people ask us the questions that they should be asking their vet. Most store employees aren't going to know what to feed a dog with specific medical issues, but customers expect us to know exactly what to tell them when they ask a huge range of medical issues.

Some of the smaller name places know their stuff, pet people ( or something) had a very knowledgable gal who introduced me to Origen and spent time explaining protein levels vs protein source ect. I did switch from Eukanuba after doing some further Internet searching.

Every now and again, I go to Petsmart with Tucker. I've been kind of disgusted recently because people just let their dogs mark stuff and don't clean it up at least. It's pretty gross! Everyone always seems to get a kick out of Tucker's human sweatshirt that he wears! Most of the employees know not to give Tucker treats unless they ask now. I had a trainer just walk right up to him and hand him a treat. I was polite about it, and said "I'm sure he appreciated the treat, but please ask me next time because he could have been allergic to the ingredients in the treat." She apologized, and said she didn't even think about it. Lowes is probably my favorite place to go with Tucker!

I'm not tucker's mom.. Lowe's does allow dogs in their stores here where I live. Hopefully it's a "company wide" policy. Give them a call and ask
