  • Is that a dane lab mix? URGH!!!!

Don't people know dogs...Some ninnie just asked me..."is that a dane lab cross?" It's all I could do not blow up in his face....."no, that's a purebred black great dane".....he then followed by..."kinda small isn't he?" That's it....now he's gonna get it. "have you ever seen a great dane upclose?. Lokki is 10 1/2 months 120Lbs and 33" tall. He's actually average for a Dane that age....He's as tall as the requierments to be able to show him"...."oh" he replied. He was cluless this guy....I think that Danes suffer from all the exagerations we might be putting on the breed....In people's eyes they are all 8' tall and weigh 500lbs....that's a great dane. I asked him if he ever say a basketball player on tv....he replied "yes"....then I asked "Do you think they are average?" He said "no"....my point exactly....What you see on tv or read in books is not always the way it is....Same for all the model magazines...we do not all look like that......

Thanks for letting me vent guys and girls....I needed it.

Sometimes I think Annabelle weighs 500lbs...especially when she sits on me, or lays on me trying to convince me to give up my spot on the bed. :P :P :P :P

To paraphrase the sixthh sense...I see stupid people everywhere...they walk around and they don't even know....that they're stupid.

Funny you should mention this. There is a greatdane rescue in Ohio www.hhdane.com there is an article on that website about how people tend to overlook the natural eared blacks, as they think they must be some other breed, or a mixed breed.
The animal warden that I got my old girl from asked me if I could take a greyhound dalmation mix. Greyhound dalmation. (Guess what color she is)
I used to own a dalmation and when I would walk them together, people always remarked about how they never saw such a big dalmation. (I and would reply, "And you never will".) They also constantly asked me if the dalmation was the dane's puppy. Even when the dal was 10 years old and obviously no puppy.
      Geez. People.

Funny, I always get the opposite. "My god that is the biggest dog I've ever SEEN!!" "Man, he is HUGE!!"....and my boy is small for a male. He's about 34 inches and 145 pounds, and 3 1/2 years old. I get the funniest looks sometimes when I tell him he's on the small side for a male. Occasionally I will run into someone who is familar with Danes who will comment that he's a little small. It's rare though!

I had the same thing happen to me today at the petstore. My girl is 15weeks.She has natural ears and is small. The person asked if she was a dane/lab mix, when I said no she looked at me like I was a fool!I just told the person,No....she is all great dane and walked away.I think people are a little to comfortable with saying whatever is on their mind!I got into a debate with an older gentleman,he insisted she was a black lab puppy.I don't understand why people care so much and want to correct me!I get tired of feeling like I have to pull out her pedigree!lol.....Fay

Sounds to me like people are just trying to make friendly conversation.

What's the big deal if a non-Dane person asks if your dog is a mix?

Yeah, I feel your pain. Even though Emma's a brindle, she's natural eared and small (100 lbs.). People either just stare slack-jawed and say "BIG DOG!" or they insist she can't be "full bred" because she's too small to be "all dane." It's either shock at her size compared to average-sized dogs, or "I know/used to have a dog way bigger than that one!"

I don't think the issue is whether or not they make casual conversation by asking if the dog is a mix. It's when people get cocky and start arguing with the owner saying, "No that isn't a pure-bred Great Dane." I know when my boy was a pup, he was slow to grow and once in Petsmart I had a lady argue with me and hubby that our dog was a lab. She persisted - even following us down another aisle to keep arguing. It's people like her that this post is talking about...

Friendly being the operative word in your sentence. If someone asks me if my lightly marked harl girl is a dal/albino/etc...I don't mind, if they ask nicely. The problem arises, and I am sure this is why Yukon Sly is upset as it annoys me also, when people *correct* you. It is *my* dog, I think I would know if it was a mix or not. It is having to defend yourself to strangers who think they know *everything* about all breeds of dogs.

Nice people asking honest questions are never a problem. They are always polite and inquisitive, and genuinely interested.

Oh, and I hate the "I knew a dane who was 40" tall and 250#" comments. I just smile and say, "wow that is really unsual! only a handful of danes ever reach that size and stature. I've actually only met one, at an all dane show." That usually sends the argumentative ones packing. All other passerbys will ask, "oh, what is normal size for a dane then?" I *LOVE* those people, as they are open to education about our beloved breed.

I just had to address the basketball player comment - I ran into a bunch of professional players in Arizona about 15 years ago, and one of those guys had to be 7 feet tall. Some might be average, but holy cow, that group was all taller than my boss and he was about 6'3".

I know exactly where you are coming from. Evy is a 10 month old natural eared black and I can't even count the number of times I was asked or "told" that she is a Lab mix. I have absolutely no problem with the people who ask questions, I actually enjoy it. Black Danes are very few and far between in these parts so I understand the questions. My issue is with the people who "tell" me what kind of dog I have. That really gets me going, my husband walks away because he knows that I can only be polite for so long. The most interesting thing that I have ever heard come out of someones mouth was when Evy was just 5 months old we were in a Pet store and an employee came up to me and said that "he" ( I always get he. I don't know why ) was a beautiful Dane but what is he mixed with?" Ofcourse I said "nothing, "she" is purebred." He then said, "really? I thought only mixes had white spots on them!" Evy has a white spot the size of a quarter on her chest. I didn't know how to respond to that. I think that it was the first time that I was ever speachless!!

RE: Is that a dane lab mix? URGH!!!!

I think "some" people are just innocently ignorant about how danes should look, I used to be and am still learning, BUT-around here there are so many inbred, black danes from byb's, and they do look like dane/lab mixes. It would be a ligit question here. It's sick and it's very sad to me.

No one has ever asked if Jax (fawn) was a dane, they would say nice looking dane! I like the ears uncropped. When they looked at Apollo (adopted black) though, they would ask if he was a mix because he looked like a tall black, Lab.

There are always the Jerks who think they know everything too. That's when I like to say that my dogs are really protective over me, and I should get going Heh heh heh! :P

My girls are always called "he". I mean come on with a Dane it's virtually impossible to not notice if they are male or female even if they are neutered!! With my Hailey it is impossible even for the most ignorant to not see that she's a girl. She is tall (37") but very petite and feminine built. She literally screams girl.
Cheyanne is a brindle and very much Dane "looking" , but I don't know how many times I've been asked what breed she is .When I say a Great Dane I hear "oh really? I didn't know they came in that color,I thought they only came in brown/blonde".

That's my opinion also. If you ask me what the dog is, I'll be more than happy to "educate" you. If you tell me what the dog is....unless you show me your Dog Expert Certificate, don't push your opinion on me. After all, it is MY dog....not yours. I guess I should of asked waht mix he was? He didn't look purebred himself It took me a long time to find a reputable breeder, one I could trust and I have the papers for my dog....I just find it insulting.

                            Cheers.

Well, all I can say is at least people take a GUESS at what YOUR dogs are....people just look dumbfounded at my guy. He is a European Dane, really big, and a Harl MisMark. Loads of merle in him, so, no one has EVER seen anything like him...

"What on earth is he?" is what I get all the time.

I often think people are so shocked by big dogs they just WANT to talk to you. And for the record, I am a life-long Dane-head, but still think a LOT of the Danes in this country are "weensy" these days, and not "dane like" in my opinion, so, who can blame the ordinary guy on the street?
