RE: Is that a dane lab mix? URGH!!!!

I always thought that the lab thing came from the fact that they (labs)are so popular. When most people see a good sized black dog with reasonably short hair they automatically think "lab". There's no excuse for the arguing though. As far as the he/she thing, I grew up with male dogs always. When I got Xena it took some getting used to, just to use the "she" instead of "he" because all the dogs I had were always "he". Being aware that it can be irrating to others (yes, I irratated MYSELF) I usually ask when I meet a new dog rather than bending down to "look" :-)

      Life_with_Laird:

This situation is what this post is about:

Yesterday I am walking Maximus, and these two ladies in a mini van had parked in front of a house. As we approached, one said, "Oh, what a pretty lab/Dane mix!" I said "Thank you" and informed her that he was pure Dane. She looked at me and said, "Oh no he isn't. His ears aren't standing up." :'(

I laughed and told her that ears aren't what make a Great Dane a Dane. She continued to argue with me, and as I began to walk away, she mouthed off with a comment like, "Oh yeah, see, you know I'm right; you are walking away."

So, I turned around and told her that I'm walking away b/c I don't have time to deal with argumentative, stupid people, and that if she'd like to see his papers, I'd be happy to bring them over and show her.

She looked at me like a deer caught in headlights and just walked off.

      Ha - take that.. :P

Two of my three have cropped ears & are obviously danes, Gus on the other hand is a Weim or some variation of that, I just pull his ears up (like cropped) and then they see it.

Why don't you try that next time someone questions your dog, to many they just don't look like Danes with their ears down. Ends arguements pretty quickly.

          >I mean come on with a Dane it's virtually impossible to not notice >if they are male or female even if they are neutered!!

I would have to disagree, at least based of my experience. My 13 month old male was neutered at 5 months and has such a small wee-wee (so disproportionally small for a 140 pound dog) that others will walk up and say things like "how old is he, er, I mean she"? (after doing the look under). It's so small they change their version to female because they couldn't see it! :'(

Poor baby - I hope he doesn't realize how pitifully small it is! :P

RE: Is that a dane lab mix? URGH!!!!

Shoot, Neo has the classic fawn Dane look and has cropped ears, but we still get people who are amazed at his size and stop to talk to us and don't know what breed he is. Some people just aren't dog-knowledgeable, I guess. Just yesterday we had two kids fly by on the main street while we were out in the yard, and we heard one of the literally scream at the driver....the kid slammed on his brakes, did a U-turn in the next side street, flew back to our house, parked in front ( all the while with the stereo obnoxiously loud and booming ), jumped out of the car, and came to see Neo. He then told my husband that he thought Neo was a Doberman!! (Neo is a FAWN) As fast as they were driving, no wonder they couldn't tell what he was LOL...but they still didn't know what kind of dog he was when they saw him up close.

            Some people!
