  • Holistic Select or Canidae?

Looking for a premium kibble for my new pup. Anyone have experience with these brands or suggestions for another brand?

How old is your puppy? What are you currently feeding? Depending on age will depend on suggestions.

Pup is 13 weeks old and has been eating Holistic Select large and giant breed puppy food and seems to be doing well on it but I'm not sure if this has the correct calcium/phosphorous levels. Also I'm extremely paranoid after losing my beloved Zeus to osteosarcoma and want to make sure the new pup grows correctly.

Calcium not over 1.5 and phosphorous not over 1.0 , lower is better. From what I have read on the Holistic it is within the safe levels so you should have no worries.. I'm sorry for the loss of your Zeus... It is heartbreaking when we lose them.. I don't know how old he was when he passed or age he was when he was neutered or bloodline history.. but neutering early can increase risk of cancer and genetics can also be involved.

Unfortunately Zeus was only 4yrs. 10 months old when I had to have him put down. Noticed a swelling on his right front ankle Thanksgiving 2016, took him to the vet the next day and X-rays showed a growth. Took him to specialist in Ames for more tests and possibly amputation and chemo but it had already spread. 3 months later after a lot of pampering and meds he was gone. He was neutered at 6 months due to vets recommendation. What is the best age to neuter? Or not at all? Don't want to make the same mistakes with this pup (Apollo). Thankyou very much for your help with the food. Jim.

Definitley do NOT neuter under 12 months of age... Best would not be before 18 -24 months.. It is sad that the vet recommended to neuter so early... studies have shown an increase in bone cancer in large/giant breed dogs neutered under 12 months and the risk decreases even more if you wait even longer (18 -24 months or later if you can)

Thank you, will definitley hold off on neutering and have also already changed vets due to callous and indifferent treatment to Zeus who wasn't "just a dog" but a member of my family.
