  • Hello from Athena and Copper!

hey guys, Im Ashlee. I am always looking things up about my great dane and this site is always the first to appear so I thought you know, its time to finally join so here I am . Ive got a 10 month old great dane and a year and a half old chihuahua who are my best pals. We live in Tennessee. Im pretty sure that Athena is pregnant because her nipples are getting very swollen, her vulva is swollen and she just came out of heat. I have read that it could be an imitation pregnancy, but a male did get a hold of her one day when I let her go outside for a while. Total accident but it is happening and I am very worried about her health since she is so young. if anyone could help me out with advice on how to take care of her while she is pregnant Id be so appreciative. Ive never had to to deal with a pregnant dog before and I REALLY didnt want her to have puppies yet espically with the dog that got ahold of her. thanks

First of all, Welcome to DOL!...This is a great place for good information. Second, Hopefully it is a false pregnancy. My girl has had 2 heats and 2 false pregnancies. She turned 2 in September. Her teets looked like they were going to start producing milk, my breeder even commented on their size. She had a discharge at the time the pups would have been whelped, but alas no puppies. Yes, I have a male dog and he tried to tie with her, but it never happened even after several attempts. The attempts being on his part not mine, I kept them apart as much as possible, but sometimes they had to have time together due to time constraints on my part; I will not be breeding these two. So again hopefully it is a false pregnancy. Her vulva could stay swollen for a while. How long has she been out of heat? Third, is your girl a show puppy? Have you shown her at all? Do you WANT to breed her?
I hope this information helps. Good Luck!!

Are you serious? I hear stories like the OPs all the time. But yours has me going crazy

"I kept them apart as much as possible, but sometimes they had to have time together due to time constraints on my part"

You do this with two intact dogs while the female is in heat?
That has got to be one of the dumbest things I've ever read on DOL.
You have let her almost get pregnant twice now and she is just now two?
You think you have time constraints now, what are you gonna do when she does have puppies.
Let me again and drop this before I say something really bad.

Before people jump all over you here....I'd like to say welcome to DOL, you've come to the right place to find answers.

I understand that if Athena IS pregnant, that it was an accident on your part...which sets you apart from the BYB type people that purposefully force pregnancy on a young dog for money and selfish reasons...but you do need to know that it is a very big deal if Athena IS pregnant, and you have a lot of work ahead of you, so prepare yourself, and do all your research...hopefully it is a false pregnancy.

It is important that (incase this is a false pregnancy) that you keep a very close eye on her, until she is spayed. You do plan on spaying her correct? Then there's no need to worry about accidental pregnancies. What type of dog was it that bred her (or attempted to?)? It is responsible dog ownership to be careful that dogs are not accidentally bred for many reasons...but I can understand that it was an accident, and accidents happen.

I have no advice for if she is pregnant...I've never bred a dog before, on accident or purpose....so hopefully someone with that type of experience can help you out

        Good luck!

I'd spay her as ASAP. She's the right age for a spay, but the wrong age to have puppies.

              thanks guys

I took her to the vet and he said I wont spay her because she is in heat. I didn't know she was in heat when I took her. I know I should of taken her sooner and it is my fault shes pregnant (if she is) because I was irresponsible for not spaying her sooner. I will spay her as soon as possible. A very large red and white hunting dog got her. He looked like copper off the fox and the hound haha. She has become SO much more loving in the past couple weeks. And she has calmed down a lot and sleeps much more than normal. I've upped her food a cup a day and she is loving that. I'm taking her in a week for an ultrasound. Because the male got ahold of her around November 9th.

IMO.... Spay her now, whether she is or isn't pregnant.
10 months is waaaaaay too young to be going through whelping.
This could very easily kill her. Why risk it?

But she's no longer in heat now, right? So spay her now. She's just a baby, please don't go through with this litter. Instead of an ultrasound schedule the spay.

I agree, spay her asap...hear too many horror stories from my mom (a vet tech) about accidental breedings, puppies coming too soon, etc, etc, etc...the last one ended with 9 dead puppies and a momma that might go that direction as well.

But, other than that, welcome to DOL, it's been a great place fo knowledge for and a great place to make some lifelong "dane" friends (since most of my other friends think I'm crazy with the amount of time I spend talking about my dogs )

It's ok to spay her if she's pregnant? Then why would my vet not spay while in heat

In normal situations it's better to spay when they're not in heat. But, it can be done. Just as a spay can be done when the female is pregnant. There's more risk, but not as much risk as letting her have a litter at her age.

If your vet won't spay, I'd find one that will.

He said he would do the spay. I had no idea you could spay a pregnant dog. Or I would have already done so.
