  • New to Danes

Hello, my name is Teresa and I am a stay at home mother of three looking to possibly acquired a Great Dane, not now but sometime in the near future, to serve as a companion and potential service animal for myself and my family.. Before making my final decision I feel it is necessary to learn as much about the breed as I can... In doing so I visited several websites dedicated to Great Danes and Compared the information I received.. A number of these websites { particularly those dedicated to Harlequins} strongly discouraged Harlequin to Harlequin breedings claiming that the resulting puppies, if any, are often prone to and/or born with several genetic defects and aliments. However the GDCA site states that such a breeding is exceptable. I posted this to the GDCA webmaster and he directed me to post it here.. I'm just not sure what Forum it would belong in?? any suggestions??? My question is: How can such a breeding (halequin to harlequin}still be deemed exceptable if the resulting puppies are more that likely to be born in ill health???

Thank you for your welcome, I hope to learn alot from this site.... and it is ok I believe that I have already gotten an answer to my question in one of the other forums. It seems I may have misinterpereted what was being said.. That it is not that the breedings are being discouraged as a whole... Just certain ones where there is an overabundance of white present in the coats....

Harl to Harl can and do produce white puppies. Many of these puppies are deaf and or blind. I believe the mantle gene pool is too small to consistently use them, from the standpoint of finished champions. I may get corrected on that point.

        Welcome

          to DOL!!!!

If you are interested in Harlequin breeding, a definitive source is JP Yoshua's Chromadane web site here: http://www.chromadane.com/HarlFamilyColor.htm Check out the area under "Problems associated with Harlequin Breeding."
