  • novice , still learning

Hello, I'm new here, and would love to have a dane. have been trying to do alot of "homework" beforehand. I currently have 2 wonderful dogs (mixed breeds)and as with any other dogs I've had, they have the run of the house. a real part of the family. many of the messages I've read sound really wonderful as to the personality of these dogs.
This makes them more appealing. I am, however, wondering do danes seem to develop alot of health concerns as they age? or can many of these troubles be avoided by finding a reputable breeder?

Hi! I have my first Dane, Parker, who is one, so I can't attest personally about their health into the golden years, but I feel confident that we can at least minimize the potential for diseases and problems later in life by pre-puppy research into breeders and health as well as what you do with your pup and pet in their lifetime. Even something so simple as regular teeth brushing and/or good chew bones (real raw bones) can prolong both the overall health (gum and tooth problems affect much more than simply the gums and teeth) as well as long term comfort of your pet.

Danes don't live as long as some breeds, but what you get for their slightly shorter time is well worth it for me. I can't imagine having any other breed. Many breed info sheets will say 6-8 years for a Dane, which I see as outdated (although I'm no expert or breeder, just my opinion), and I would see it closer to 10 plus on average . I've met several very senior Danes just walking around my area or going to the dog park (two 13 year olds). I hear about more and more older Danes and I think that many breeders have worked really hard towards longevity - yet another reason to support reputable breeders!

    Welcome!
