  • Clear Vulva Discharge?

Have any of your Danes experienced a clear discharge from the vulva? I just noticed tonight that she has a slow dripping of clear mucus looking fluid. I put a diaper on her because it's enough to not just wipe her when I see it. It smells a little funky.....not the worst thing ever but not pleasant.

Could this be a UTI symptom? From the point we adopted her on....we have been trying to clear up some runny stools from the food she was on....sometimes the poo runs down to her vulva area. I use a rinse free foam soap and paper towels to clean her up when it happens. Could that have caused a UTI? I'll give the vet a call when they open tomorrow but I'm just wondering.

    Poor Iris....she can't win!

Edited to add....she occasionally licks her backside but sometimes she will do it before she tries to poop. She doesn't seem to be trying to go for her vulva....mostly her rectum.

You are probably correct in thinking a UTI, or possibly a yeast type of event because of the antibiotics she may have been on. And it isn't a stretch in assuming it could be a result of bacteria getting in from her poo. On second thought, a UTI would also present with frequent peeing, so if you aren't seeing that then it may be yeast, or uterine infection. Is she intact?? Just some ideas ... I'll be interested in hearing what it is after you talk to the Vet. Ps ... could she be going into heat? That would have a discharge.

It's most likely vaginitis. How old is she? It clears up once a female is spayed. You can try feeding her plain yogurt in her food. One or two tablespoons per meal.

She is estimated to be about 5 and the rescue said she appeared to be spayed before they got custody of her. She isn't peeing excessively....same as the other dogs on potty breaks.

I'll try the yogurt thing. The vet was only open till noon and I missed them so I'll have to call Monday.

Would vaginitis still be a possibility if she is spayed?

She doesn't have the symptoms of a UTI. I don't remember ever having a spayed female with vaginitis. Try the yogurt and see if it helps. If she isn't spayed the symptoms could be a uterine infection. Does she look slightly swollen in the back end like she's coming in season?

Her vulva is sticking out slightly. She has a green line tattoo on her belly....I thought that meant she was spayed.

Will definitely try the yogurt tonight.

If she is a bit swollen behind and she's got some clear discharge she might be coming into heat. Peach just came into heat for the first time a few weeks ago and she started with a little bit of clear, stringy discharge just about 7 days before the real brownish red discharge started.

ETA: I think you are right about the green line meaning spayed... but maybe something got botched? Maybe enough ovarian tissue was left to trigger heat cycles, or enough uterine stump? Just a thought. Poor girl, sounds like she's going through a lot!

Oh Lordy....let's hope not. The discharge is still clear but there is more of it today. Enough that I've had to wash her blankets and put a diaper on her.

Did start yogurt last night but it sounds like we might be headed down a different path. If she had an ovary sparing spay she would still have heats, right?

Hmm, that sounds like a lot, more than I experienced with Peach before she came into heat, but I suppose they are all different. If she did have an ovary sparing spay (which aren't really super common) she would still have heats and swelling, but I understand that she wouldn't have the discharge associated with it (since the discharge comes from the uterus, which is the piece removed in an OSS).

The discharge, have you tried smearing it on a white paper or napkin to make sure it's really white? I found at first I couldn't tell just from looking if it had a slight tinge to it until it was on something white.

She's been wearing diapers and so far all the discharge has been clear. I just got her out of her crate to feed her and her vulva looks smaller now.....I am so confused. Lol
I texted the rescue lady last night and she said Iris was treated for one UTI while she was with them but she was uriniating frequently and had blood. In her urine. She doesn't have any frequency and her urine looks very clear and normal yellow at this point.
I'm calling the vet today to see if he thinks this warrants a visit as she is acting normal......good appetite, drinking, pooping and peeing, playing.

I'll let you guys know what I find out!

Her urine came back clear. The discharge seems to have lessened but now it seems like she is a little urine incontinent. For the most part she can hold it but I am noticing little wet spots on her blankets mostly when she's napping.

This afternoon she started having watery stools....one even looked almost clear. this poor girl....once we get over one hurdle she gets another.

She seems to be feeling really good through despite the issues. She was charging around the backyard with Shep. It was just a blur of legs and fur.

Fingers crossed this is just food or stress related (we went from kibble to raw for her because of her rectum surgery and loose stools as the sphincter rebuilds).

I scaled back on her raw feed and supplements today. I was probably pushing too much too fast and that's why she got diarrhea.

We just did the meat and yogurt today. No vitamin C or pumpkin. It occurred to me that she had pork yesterday too and I didn't stick to the one protein rule. No diarrhea and very little discharge today.
