  • Zoomer has Distemper

His PCR test came back positive for Distemper, Coronavirus and Mycoplasma. Our vet upped his meds - he is still on Amoxicillin and Zeniquin. However our rescue coordinator is strongly urging us to switch to Doxycycline, Chloramphenicol as well as a bronchodilator. We are planning to see her vet for a second opinion hopefully on Thursday or Friday...

So upset - I really am hoping he won't progress into the neurological stage.

Distemper is a virus. Other than treating the symptoms i don't know what good antibiotics does. If you are the least bit alternative medicine inclined Colloidal Silver is a good thing to give to dogs with a virus. You just put it in their water.

I believe the idea behind antibiotics is to help prevent secondary infections (pneumonia etc). I read that Doxy is effective against Mycoplasma as well.

I read about colloidal silver in the holistic article you posted Carol - do you know what the mechanism is? Also will it interfere with other meds?

I have heard of vets using antibiotics to keep the dog from contracting pneumonia on top of the distemper

No Colloidal Silver won't interfere with the other meds. It's small pieces of silver suspended in water. That's the simple version.

I am so sorry to read this. We still have a little handicapped puppy who dealt with parvo, hod , uti's and now a infection in her spin all this in the first four month of her life . She is on Tramadol as she is in a lot of pain. Do distemper dogs need pain management ?
You guys are in my prayers !

Praying for your pup! His reaction to possible kennel cough was very severe and now it makes sense. Hoping it does not progress!

No pain management at this point. We caught it early, so I'm hoping this will help. Our vet said there's about a 30-50% chance it will go into the neurological stage... His distemper viral load level was low enough that it would actually have been considered normal IF he had been given a distemper vaccination in the last six weeks. However he had not had one, thus it becomes pretty much confirmed as distemper.

He had all of his shots, but apparently his immunity was weakened for some reason. It could be that his first shots were given too early, and maternal antibodies interfered. Or it could be something else. When I was researching it I found a statistic that seemed to point to a relatively high percentage (maybe 20-30%) of vaccinated dogs do not have complete immunity. From now on I will be having titres (titers) done on every dog we own.

To boost his immune system you can give Ester-C. I would give 500 mg 4 times a day. Work up to that amount.

Can you give Ester C to a pup about 4 month old who had tons of medication

I was wondering about ester C as well. My pup has Demodex and we are only treating it with shampoos and creams at the moment as I don't want to pump his body with ivermectin. I was looking for options to boost his immune system. My vet is great with the meds, not so great with the natural/holistic approaches.
