  • Young & Clumsy or Serious Potential Issues?

    Hi,

The past few days, I've noticed Apollo has been kind of on and off. There are days where he his bouncy, happy self, then days, like today, where it almost seems like he's sore and depressed.

I know most puppies are generally pretty clumsy when they're young and getting used to their bodies, but Apollo has me a little concerned. At times he will almost wobble around (which I have attributed to him trying to scratch at himself while walking), and times where he will try to get up (maybe too quickly) and fall over himself.

Today, while we were going through our daily training session, it seemed like he was having an issue sitting down. He would lower very slowly and rise very slowly.. Very weird. Also, he normally has no issues with stairs, and today, I haven't been able to get him to come up the stairs once. He has also been laying down and just staring at me when I ask him to "come." I'm wondering if maybe he hurt himself while attempting one of his couch-climbing expeditions or maybe he might have some surfacing hip issues?

He is due for his next vet visit on the 6th, so I'm going to talk to the doc about maybe getting him x-rayed, but I'm just worried, and the 6th is a long ways away! (Not really, but it sure seems that way).

    Thank you so much!

I have a couple questions. Is he crated during the day or does he have a room he is locked up in? When you walk him, is he on a leash and how does he act on a leash? From the sound of it, I dont think there is much to worry about but I know when I first got Keoki as a puppy, he would tumble over himself and your pup could have maybe hurt himself enough to make him just want to lay there and heal? I would def bring it up to the vet when you go see them.

Can you get a picture of his front legs? Put him on a table (have someone help you hold him) and take them at eye level. Tucker was really clumsy when he started to knuckle over.

Please post pics of his legs... Have you given any vaccines recently?
What are you feeding him? And how much are you feeding him? His Age?

Im having the same issues with Max...up and down days...only his is the back end, sometimes limping (alternating legs) sleeps/lies down a lot, seems glum. Got some good advise (on growing pains) from one of my pervious posts.

Called the vet and inquired, they said to keep an eye and there are any other symptoms to bring him in....but likely was from rough play or growing pains. Max is a year on Monday though...so he is older, but he doesn't seem to know that. He's 12 months (almost), and just a hair under 36".

He's really tired right now (had a long day), but I'll definitely post some pictures once he gets up.

I have a couple questions. Is he crated during the day or does he have a room he is locked up in? When you walk him, is he on a leash and how does he act on a leash? He is crated for a max of 4 hours a day, IF he is even crated at all, and he already has a colossal crate (picture below)
He isn't usually on a leash because I can't take him out into public yet; two more sets of shots before then. I'm definitely going to bring it up to the vet when I take him on the 6th.. It might just be growing pains.. I'm not sure though..

This is the only picture I have that could even come close to what you guys are asking for until I'm able to take another one.

Katie - I posted a link below to give you an idea of what knuckling looks like. My picture is on post 22. Gosh he was a cute puppy!
If you look at his left front leg, see how it appears to be bowing out? He was starting to knuckle over. At the time, he was eating ProPlan half adult/half puppy....breeder recommendation. Ugh! I switched him immediately to an all adult formula, and the leg corrected itself. You can add some Ester-C as well. When his leg was like this, he was definitely more clumsy. He never acted like it hurt hiim, but he was definitely more clumsy. He would run and play on it, but then stumble over that leg. I'd also notice that after long play sessions, the leg would shake. Best way to describe it would be muscle exhaustion. I hope this helps a little.

Wow! Yeah, Apollo's foot looks like that, but not nearly as bad.. I haven't noticed it as much since he's been on Orijen. But I'll have to take a picture so I can post it and see what you think. Thank you so much!!!!

                        attn: tuckers mom

Just read your comments about your dane being clumsy, leg shaking after lots of play or exercise, etc it was like you were describing my gus! Tomorrow I am switching him off puppy food, he is 11 wks old. How old was your dane when this happened to him? Honestly believe too much protein and puppy versus adult formula is the issue. Sure hope it is not a real big probkem for him.

Pano is growing pains. Cut back on the amount of food you are feeding keeping the pup on the thin side.
