  • blood in urine

My husband just called me and told me that Maggie peed and there was blood in her urine. I'm freaking out. Vet can see her tomorrow morning when they open. What could this be?

How much blood? And sorry, I can't remember, but she is spayed right? Trying to rule out a heat cycle...

Could be a UTI, very common. A vet visit is probably in order. Good luck!

Yes. She is spayed. She has been on and off pred due to her allergies. Could that be the cause?

My other thought was uti. What triggers urinary tract infections in dogs?

Yes, dogs on long term use of corticosteroids are at higher risk for UTIs. This is what I suspect it is. The vet will be able to confirm diagnosis and give you meds.

I would also add this supplement, the cranberry helps to avoid recurring UTIs: http://www.naturesfarmacy.com/store/...php?prodId=260

Another very benign possibility is a small stone. I hauled Bobo to the vet in a panic after he peed frank blood in his last winter. I was sure it was something awful!
Turns out he had a stone, which he passed on his own and was totally fine. He probably had them before, but I never saw it until he peed in the snow. The vet told me it was more common in males, but maybe??

He needed no meds or aftercare, but he sure paid a lot of attention to his "undercarriage" for a few days!

                UTI
any chance of getting her in today? They are very painful and can lead to kidney damage if left untreated too long.

                Edit to add:
I would do a culture/sensitivity before the antibiotics are started to make sure you use the right one.

Thanks for all the information! I would have loved to take her in today but the vet was closing at 5 and I was over an hour away at 4. . Plus there is a snow storm here right now. I have the first appt in the morning though. Will report back. Hope it's just a uti. She seems pretty happy though and is doing zoomies in the snow. Will order those supplements. Thx.

P.S. Carolyn, are you getting snow as well? I see that you are in WI.

My only option at this point is the 24 hour emergency vet which is far away and it's snowing here so it's very dangerous to go out there now. The vet suggested waiting till the morning due to the weather conditios. Should I disregard that and have her seen right away?

I would take her to your regular vet first thing in the morning. Unless she is acting like she's in immense pain... But zoomies in the snow suggests waiting til morning will be just fine.

Only an inch of snow here in Stevens Point.

I guess Im trying to figure out (being in a NW sub of Chicago) how the closest vet is an hour away?

Any vet can diagnose a UTI, and it is important for meds to be started ASAP.

Is your girl squatting to pee often?

That's quite the difference. We got about 8-10 inches yesterday on top of the snow we already had. I think you misunderstood my previous post. When my husband called me to tell me about the issue I was at work downtown which is an hour away from where I live and we can only transport her in my car. My vet is only about 15 minutes away, but unfortunately, they close at 5 most days and there was no way I could make it back home by 5 yesterday with the snow storm.

In any event (sorry for the digression!), Maggie does have a UTI. She is now on antibiotics and cranberry supplements. Thanks for helping me calm down last night! I appreciate it!
