  • wanted adv. on 8 month old that has hip dp. and a limp in his front leg

I would just like some advice they can't tell me what is going on with the front leg so I know I've got to get a second app. But I just was wondering if anyone had been through this or new anything about it that would help! thank u o and the reason for is because I want to make sure I didn't help make the situation worse because I just don't won't my little girl to have these problems at some point it just started feeling like this was my fault or what if I could have prevented it

Could be Pano. If it is, it can shift from limb to limb. Don't overfeed and if your pup seems in pain, your vet can give Tramadol or something similar.

We could use alot more information.......

You mention your pup has hip dysplasia, how was that diagnosed and at what age?

What are you feeding your pup? Yes, nutrition is directly related to certian growth issues.

Do you have other dogs? Do you take her to the dog park? Is she crated, tied up during the day or confined in some way?

You say she is limping..........hard limp, very mild limp, limps all the time, only limps when she gets up, limps so bad she is on 3 legs?

Has she run a temperature at all?

Soft tissue injury, OCD and pano are the first things that come to mind (though there is a hairline fracture, pulled ligaments, pad injury and a host of other things to consider). Soft tissue injury cannot be diagnosed by rads, but more palpations/manipulations by your vet. OCD needs to be diagnosed by rads and surgery is needed to fix this, pano is also diagnosed by rads and NSAIDS are used to help reduce inflammation/pain.

So basically, a trip to the vet is needed for a proper diagnosis.
      Good luck!

She doesn't have any problems my male does and totw I was going to go by the gd lady but I had seen the opinion of her on here as far as food but the hip dp. We happened to run across when we did X-rays of everything because of the limp with the front leg is how all this started off of why I took him in and news just got worse from there the balls of the hips both right and left have flat spots from wear already but I got him at three months and that guy gave calcium supplements to all his dogs and I had taken him off of it just like my new little girl was on msm and I took her off that because I was told not to supplement but they have my male on prevacox or I think that's how u spell it hope this is a little more info. And they are crated at night my males crate stays open and he just likes to sleep in it but I aona my little girl is crates for potty training at night other than that they have the run of the house lol

What are you feeding the pups now........not what you want to feed, what are they being fed now?

Is he limping all the time, hard, 3 legged limp? Or limps once in awhile? When did the limping start?

Personally, I dont trust any "regular" vet to diagnose a dog with hip dysplasia. Ive seen way to many get it wrong! I would get a second opinion about that too.

Im getting the impression that there is more going on, as most vets will not xray the rear when a front leg is limping? Since your vet xrayed the rear, did he by chance xray the shoulder and look for OCD since that is where the problem is? Again, its kinda tricky getting good rads of the shoulder looking for OCD.

If this is a prolonged limp I would be going to an ortho specialist for an evaluation.

Unfortunately we can only give you ideas with the information you provide.........you really need to see a specialist to get a diagnosis.
            Good luck!

The limp started out of the blue and to the normal person they wouldn't have even seen it at first but I took him in right when I seen it but two months later u can see it all the time and he will limp hard after he gets to playing and the only way I can stop him from playing is to crate him and i don't see that helping matters and the hips x- ray was done because I asked for it to be since we had things going on with the front leg because he is young to be having these problems to me so I want to make sure the back hips and legs were ok to but I'm feeding totw but yes I've got to get a referral to the orthopedic specialist but my vet has to set it up I can't call and make the app but I wished he would have x-rayed the shoulder but he didn't but got to see some one else about him because I think it is over my vets head not being mean but it seems like things are getting.g worse fast and that worries me

<<got to see some one else about him because I think it is over my vets head not being mean but it seems like things are getting.g worse fast and that worries me.>>

Thats not be meaning at all, its truthful and most vets will tell you straight out that those issues are out of their ability to take care of.

If this is anykind of injury...soft tissue, pano, ligament pull, hairline fraction, dislocated toe......crate rest is mandatory, along with NSAIDS for inflammation and pain. Continue exercise will only further the problem, which as you say, is happening.

If this is something more serious like OCD, only rads will diagnose that and surgery will be needed to fix it. Hopefully this isnt the case.

While you are at the Ortho Specialist, I would re-shoot his hips and get his opinion. If this pup truly does have HD, you can be giving him certain supplements to help him. No sense in spending money on supplements he doesnt need if there isnt a problem.

Also.......is he neutered yet? If not, I would make that a priority.

If you can, I would contact your vet today and have him make you an appt with the Specialist ASAP......dont let him put you off!

I would schedule his neuter for as soon as possible. It sounds like the crate rest and leash walks (which are mandatory after a neuter) would also do his front leg some good too.

Neutering is controversial........but you also have a puppy bitch in your home, which complicates matters. Your male will become more territorial and protective of his girl the older he gets and as he starts producing testosterone.
And since you are a mom with two young kids at home, this is a problem you dont need to deal with!

I had thought the same with the kids my friends house that me and my kids go down to all the time she has a papion that is in season in her house and my danes go with me she lives out in the country so my danes can play off leash and I had noticed kodie getting more aggressive the last couple of days and not listening to me as much is not like him and he got out of hand with one of the kids the other day and he has NEVER done that so that kind of gives me a answer
