  • the bump on the head?

Andross just over night sprouted the bump on the back upper part of his head. I know it is normal because I have seen other danes who have it and my saint bernard and english mastiff both used to have it but theirs are gone...I guess they grew into it or something. What is the bump for? I'm not even kidding andross just woke up with it this morning! Haha he must be on a growth spurt because he seems to be getting more filled in lately. If your danes have gotten the "bump" what age did they get it and when did it go away if it did?

My dad calls Murray's his knowledge bump. We are waiting for that to kick in... and it appears that we may be waiting for awhile.

Spencer has a bump so big the hair stands up. People ask us what is wrong with his head. Some call it a "smart bump" but I don't think that's the case with Spencer.

That bump is called the occiput and is part of the larger occiputal bone.

All dogs have that bone, but it is more pronounced in some breeds than others and within a breed, varies from dog to dog.

Our standard calls for a "slightly developed occiupt".

Is it pronounced like OK-i-put or OSS-i-put?

Good question! I had to look it up to be sure!

OK is what my dictionary has.

Our lab had one. We called it his 'nut of knowledge'.

I have heard this referred to as both a "knowledge bump" and as a "idiot bump". Guess it depends on the dog...
