  • 6 yo Dane-mysterious sudden health issues

Hi, I haven't posted in a loooong time.
I am looking for advice, help, etc.

I have a 6 yo dane, Sweet Caroline. We've had no major issues with her growing up, with the exception of 2 anal gland infections. Change of food, problem solved.
Right after Christmas we noticed a faint smell...to make a long story short, realized she had an anal gland infection after a week. It had been so long since the last one I didn't even think of it. I just thought she needed a bath (which I took her to the groomers)-when that didn't rid the smell, it finally hit me. So, we started on a medication(which I don't even know the name of. I would assume it was a generic antibiotic). She was on it for 10 days and within that period we took her a few times for expression. It did not rid the infection and it was apparently-by the vets standards, pretty bad. So, he recommended a stronger medication. My husband picked it up and I started her on it. It was for 10 days also. Good news is the infection is cleared (we hope-all seems good), bad news is her health is suddenly deteriorating. ??? I checked the medication, which is Baytril. I questioned the vet after 5 days when I took her in for another expression. She lost 7-8 lbs since the initial visit 24 days ago. She won't put much weight on her back right leg and is having major issues getting up and down. She is lethargic and just looks like shes aged 3 years in 24 days. ???
Can anyone tell me if this could be a reaction to the meds or something else?
I had a conversation with my vet on Sat and he said that it could just be coincidence that her hip problem coincided with the meds. I now have a phone call in to him in which when he calls me back I am going to be more forceful with wanting better answers.
    I welcome any suggestions.
Also- she had a rabies shot before we began the meds.
I also walked her 3-4 times a week, 1-2 miles. Lately (since Dec 10) we haven't gotten out as much since we are in PA and it is cold, icy, cold and cold. So, maybe it just could be arthritis settling in. In that case, does anyone give Omega 3 fish oils (the people stuff) or B6. Any rec for people supplements?

I agree that it could be a coincedence. Baytril given to an adult dog shouldn't be a problem. Yes, I give salmon oil to my dogs in a pump bottle. I give Missing Link Plus to my oldest dog who is 9. I don't give her salmon oil since there's so much in the ML.

I doubt the baytril caused the problems. I would have bloodwork done to start with. I would think about x-rays also. Sorry your baby is having problems. Keep us updated.

Immunizations should never be given to any sick human/animal. The obvious exception are vaccines like tetanus and small pox, which have been demonstrated to be effective even AFTER the human/animal has been exposed to the toxin/disease (I don't know of any canine vaccines that are effective this way....but I admit that my canine immunology is sketchy at best). This has been a pet peeve of mine for as long as I've studied immunology. Seriously, does it seem like a good idea to divert the body's resources from fighting an ongoing infection to have to "fight" the vaccine? Oh, and OP- I hope you don't think my rant is directed against you...it's not! It's against the vet who thought it was a good idea to administer a vaccine to an ill dog. Ok. Done ranting.

I do have a thought as to the cause of your dog's joint pain. In human rheumatoid arthritis patients, infections stimulate the immune system, which in turn ups the inflammation in their joints. This often causes these patients to experience more intense pain and/or stiffness in their joints. Maybe your Caroline's anal infection followed by the rabies vaccine caused this sort of inflammation in her joints. Some of the rheumatoid arthritis patients say that moderate exercise helps relieve their stiffness, which in turn lessons the pain they experience. Maybe try walking your dog around in the house? I know I wouldn't want to walk a stiff dog out in the ice and snow- I'd be too afraid the dog would slip/fall and make their problems worse. A heating pad might also help with the stiffness. My dog loves the heating pad when he is stiff- some really cold mornings, he actually noses it towards me so that I can put it on his surgically repaired shoulder! He's not pampered or anything tho! LOL

Hope this helps, but I especially hope that your Sweet Caroline (love the name BTW) is back to normal soon.

          thanks...

for all the info so far and so quickly.
I did walk her yesterday- just a short around the block. It was sunny and cold but we both had our jackets on....
I agree with the line of thinking with the rabies shot and then the antibiotic...in hindsight I should have waited. She doesn't get it every year like they recommend- only when I need to get her Frontline stuff and they won't fill the prescription if shes behind. They told me I had to have the rabies shot before they would treat her. So, wanting her to get better I just said fine. I read here a long time ago that dogs don't need all the vaccinations that are pushed.
I have a heating pad and I am going to get it out as soon as I get home from work.
I will check into those supplements too. Does anyone give B6 to their danes? It helped my grandmothers arthritis tremendously....

            Frontline

You don't have to get Frontline from your Vet. You can order in online. It's not a prescription. A dog as old as yours doesn't need any more rabies vaccine. It causes the most problems of any of the vaccines. I wouldn't give any more if I were you. If you just must have proof she's immunized run a titer test. Giving more vaccine to a dog that is already immune doesn't make her more immune.

where do you buy online that doesn't need a prescription?
The last time I bought, online, called my vet to verify she was up to date on her...or wait, was that for the heartguard? I usually get both.
              What do you do?

and I wouldn't have got her the vaccination- I think the same way, once they are that old...
They did say they would not treat her if I didn't get it. I risk sounding ignorant here, but I think they told me it is the law- within 3 years...

You probably mean the hw meds. You can use Ivermectin next time you run out. Sorry about your girl. My fawn Daphne had problems the last year she was alive. She couldn't get up steps, hardly get up or down, get in my van, etc. We put her on Deramaxx and she was like a puppy in a couple days. Good luck!

Yes...BUT if they are considered geriatric and not 100% healthy your vet could have gotten a state exemption!! Even the vaccine manufacturers say only give to 100% healthy pets.

I hope your girl gets well real fast!!

Well that is good to know! I will make sure that is the last!

You know...at that point I just thought I just want her to get better. I didn't want it, but I also wasn't up for fighting...I just wanted her to get better.

This is why I love this site. Everyone is so helpful....

Good to know she had good results. My vet suggested that today on the phone. I'm a little hesitant to start her on something else...but knowing others had good results...??
We are going to monitor her weight until Thurs/Sat then decide if she needs blood work if she is not gaining the weight back.

The vet clinic I worked at would never force someone into any vaccine before treating them. I'm astonished they wouldn't treat your dog first. The only time we required vaccines was if the dog was staying in hospital for surgery or boarding. Just wanted to let you know, not all vets would make you vaccinate before treatment.

Most vets require the dog be utd on rabies before treating the dog.

Agree, and am fighting having to give rabies every 3 years in Maryland. The state dept. of health won't accept rabies titers, won't accept written requests from veterinarians, and the county won't allow me to buy a license for my dogs without a current rabies certificate.

I refuse to vaccinate mine for rabies after their first shot because as mentioned, it's so hard on their immune system.

So sad, according to my county's licensing authority, all my dogs have died.

ETA, BTW if anyone is interested in learning more about the effects of vaccinations on canine immune system, there's a seminar by Dr Jean Dodds and Dr. Ronald Schultz in Rutgers, NJ. Info is here: http://www.freewebs.com/rcfbenefit2009/index.htm
