Our 7 year old Dane, Connor, has had a rough week. On Monday we woke up to several puddles of foam and mucus throughout the house and he was breathing heavily. We feared bloat, so brought him to the emergency vet to get him checked out. After being x-rayed, they determined it wasn’t bloat, but noticed his bronchial area was a little inflamed. They asked about kennel cough and we came to find out he had been in contact with another dog about 10 days prior that was also recently diagnosed with kennel cough. The vet sent us home with doxycycline (antibiotic) and tramadol (cough suppressant) and said to monitor him the next few days.
He was eating just fine the first 4-5 days of being ill (about 3 of those days were on antibiotics), but since today (day 6), he is refusing to eat anything, even chicken breast or treats. He is still drinking somewhat, but is very lethargic and has been sleeping more than normal. His cough has diminished a bit, but he is still hacking up mucus from time to time. Breathing sounds fine. Should we be concerned that this is more serious than kennel cough, such as pneumonia? Or does it just take a while for the antibiotics to kick in and symptoms to diminish?
