  • Blue-Girl and Harlequin-Boy=????

Hi all, was wondering what colors would come from a Solid Blue-girl and Capone,Harlequin -boy?? Friend has violet, -blue girl who is 1 -1/2 yr. Great Dane. Friend just loves Capone and would love to have a litter from him. We both have a little time for our giants to mature but was curious of the colors that could be produced! Both of violets parents are Blues and Capone's are both Harlequins!!

Have both of these dogs been shown to their championship? If not, then they should no be bred. A dog should only be bred if it has been looked at by a third party, and is proven to be a prime example of the breed in conformation and temperment. If it is just *you* saying "oh my dog is wonderful" that isn't good enough. You also have to think about where those puppies will end up. If all your going for is the money, and you don't care what happens to the puppies, then you have no business breeding. Back yard breeders only care about the money their dog can make them by giving g them some cute puppies to sell. But atleast 1/3-1/2 of those puppies will likely end up in a shelter somewhere. Is that something you want to risk?? You would single handed be adding to the overpopulation problem we have in this country.
Please do not breed your dog's, unless they have been shown to their championship and are a proven example of the breed. You should do it to better the breed, not to make money.

The answer is that they shouldn't produce any colors because blues and harlequins are only bred by backyard breeders looking to make a profit.

I'm not looking to breed at all. Friend is a breeder and loves Capone. This is not a done deal. Just was curious of to the coats that would be produced. Anyway, I was already thinking of not doing it and am not going to do it at all now!

Blues and harlequins should NOT be bred together... Please become familiar with the GDCA breeder code of ethics and the recommended color code. Also be aware that aside from color in order to breed responsibly both dogs must have and passed health testing.. not simple vet exams but actual tests.. OFA or PennHip on Hips, OFA heart, eyes and thyroid... they also must meet breed standard and either be shown or evaluated in order to make sure they do, they also need to have a pedigree and conformation that compliments each other, they also need impeccable temperaments... anything less then the entire package is not responsible breeding.

If your friend has a blue and wants to breed to a pet harl, it sounds like they really don't know anything about responsible breeding. Maybe you could point your friend to the GDCA website to learn more and explain about health testing and responsible breeding. The last thing this breed needs is another byb litter.
