hey guys,
i've always been so curious about older generation great dane breeders.. many of which in the US seem to have disappeared /retired/have gone into such seclusion that even if i wished I could buy a pet from because they are probably the most ethical and responsible breeders, I'd never have known they existed.
and then there are those overseas, like the de la ben*****, von haus tie*****, von haus w*****, des hab** ***** etc whose lines seem to be so well meshed together, all dogs imported into the US for breeding have at least 3 of them in their 3 gen backgrounds.
Before I got my dane, while I was still in obsessive nesting mode, I did some research here on DOL and otherwise on looking at these older kennels primarily to find out what a properly-bred dane should look like and loved what I was pulling up. Black and white pictures of danes, men and women in period clothing, the very different way these dogs were being bred and kenneled and trained.. about the first couple of danes who came to the US by ship.. it was like a whole different world and all so very interesting! i borrowed Jill Swedlow's Model of Nobility and there was some, but very sparse information in there as well.
Does anyone here know about the histories of these established lines who would like to share with me their knowledge of great dane breeding histories, both here in the US and in Europe? i'm not looking to buy a dane from any of them; I'd just like to know their histories, which are the old kennels that were really famous back in the day and what happened to them, what they were famous for in their dogs. juicy stories highly encouraged!
If it's against DOL rules to name the kennel then PM me! If anyone is interested I will clean it up and post it here. thanks in advance guys
