  • White Dane

Does anyone here have a white dane? I'm sure someone does. Can you tell me what kind of things you have encountered. I've read that the color has a tendency to be deaf and I'm wondering how to go about checking to see if she's deaf. If you have one that has hearing problems how do you handle that.

We adopted one that we believe that has hearing issues which doesn't matter we love her anyway. But I like to know what I need to do.

    Thanks in advance.

I have a li'l white Dane. Annie isn't deaf but she is blind. She is a doll and a real character! She doesn't really have any issues. Her growth plates in her ulnas closed too early but that has nothing to do with her color. There are some folks on here that have deaf Danes and I'm sure someone with experience will chime in.

BAER testing is what they do to determine hearing.

I have three, white deaf Danes. You need to watch for sunburn ( I use baby # 30 sun screen) Being deaf isn't a problem, just be consistant with your hand signals. There are tons of good info on the net for training deaf dogs.

And easy way to check their hearing is to take them off somewhere where there is little distraction. Come behind them and clap your hand, or jingle keys and watch for their reaction.

Hello,I have a fabulous white boy.We have even tried a dog whistle and he hears nothing,it gets everyone elses attention but him.He is great with hand signals and well in his puppy class.Do you have other dogs because Brewser takes alot of cues from his brother and my other danes which helps tons. They bring him in when i call them or if it's night flicking the light works.I never have him off leash if we aren't home because of what could happen.I purchased a vibrating collar for him but found that i never needed it.Best wishes with your white dog.Rhonda

              RE: White Dane

Thank you guys sooo much. I have done a ton of research on the net and have found a couple of awesome sites that I'm sure I'll be going to. I'm working on the hand signals and I use hand signals w/ my hearing dogs too so that is a plus.

I have 2 other great danes and they are 18 months and almost 6 so they know the rules of the house.

I tested her hearing by banging a couple of pots together while she was asleep and she didn't move a muscle but the other 2 dogs woke up and took cover. I don't mind that she's deaf, danes are really smart and I'm sure she'll catch on.

Right now I'm trying to crate train and she just doesn't like it at all. I didn't have the problem w/ the other 2 getting them used to a crate.

I have my Jewel, she is deaf and vision impaired. Just from being around her you would never know something was wrong. She is extremely intelligent.

We knew she was deaf because when we went to the breeders, all of the pups in the kennel would wake up and bark but she would remain asleep.

                  RE: White Dane

Ok I can handle the training that I have to do w/ my hands and stuff. But here's my big question I am trying to crate train and she just barks constantly and of course she can't hear herself so she doesn't get it. I can't leave her out cause I'm housetraining so we all know how that is.

What can I do to break her of the barking while in the crate?

                    1. Ignore it.

                    2. Never open the door while she is barking.

Well the people I got her from said she was 2.5 months old but she's more like 4 months old.

She cried a little bit at night when it's bedtime and when I have to put her in it for a little bit during the morning.

It's hard to ignore the barking during the day when hubby needs to sleep during the day since he works night

Could you baby gate her in whatever room your in? That way she could be with you and you could keep a close eye on her in case she needs to go out.

Hello,Maybe put the crate somewhere away from where your husband is sleeping during the day.I put the boys in thier crates after thier meals to stop them from having a big play after eating. At first they fussed abit but went to sleep with full bellies and they always get a cookie or two for going to thier crate. Now i say go to bed and they run over me trying to get there. The nice thing about having a deaf dog sleeping in an active area of the house is they won't be disturbed by noise.Brewser is a noisy sleeper and wakes me every night. He moans, snores, and has an active dream every night, but he can't hear the ruckus he's making.Does anyone else find this with a deaf dane? The rest of the time the pups were free in the house, usually under foot,so it was easy to pick up on when they needed to go out.Rhonda

Sometimes it helps to put a blanket over the crate so they can't see. If they can't see what they're missing, they make less of a fuss.
