  • Albino Dane?

Just for curiousity, wouldn't an albino dane (if there is such a thing) have pink eyes? While walking with a friend, she talked of someones albino dane with blue eyes, pink nose, pink tone where hair is thinner, etc. I didn't comment back, but just got to wondering.}(

      RE: Albino Dane?

I always get asked if Jewel is albino. A lot of people are misinformed about that. A true albino dog is very rare, if not impossible. I'll try to explain it:

A true albino dog is pure white (zero pigment) Their skin is pale pink as are their eyes, this albinism is called tyrosinase-negative. Dogs like this are very rare and usually deaf as well.

Another form of albinism is called tyrosinase-negative. Dogs like this are not really white (such as a white german shepard dog, or west highland white terrier). Although they appear white to the eye, they are instead a light gray or pale cream color (compare them to a true double merle dog such as an aussie or some danes). You usually can't see the color unless they are side by side, but because they do have pigment, they are not usually deaf.

There are many genetic factors that can cause a dog to have a lot of white in its coat. But for a lot of danes, corgis, australian shepards, catahoulas, etc. it is caused by inheriting two Merle genes instead of one. Make any sense?? Someone correct me if I missed something.

See! I did pay attention in science class lol

Sounds good to me. That is along the lines of what I was thinking. I knew pink eyes had something to do with it. Thank you both for the replies.

We always get asked if Brewser is a albina.I used to go into a long explanation about it,now i just tell them that a true albino has pink eyes.Much easier.Brewser always draws attention,so we have this conversation often.Rhonda

lol I hear ya. Every once in awhile I get someone that argues with me. People always say "but around her eyes is pink, so she IS albino" By then I'm annoyed so I just say "shes like a harlequin but missing spots"
