  • A New Leash

After trying a couple of different leashes, I think I finally found one I really like. All of the "big dog" leashes I have been able to find in the stores have some new kind of clasp. I used one when Thor was little and it would twist and come open. Not at all trustworthy. So, I'd been using a four foot lead with a regular clasp. It worked okay, but when we would get to the park, Thor HAD to roll in the grass. Four feet was not even close to enough. The next time I went to Petsmart, I got curious and went over to the horse section. Sure enough, they had ten foot, heavy duty leads with regular clasps. I picked one with nylon rope, about as thick as my thumb. I can grasp it very well without it hurting my hands as the dog leads do. With a couple of knots along the length for grips, I think I have the perfect leash.

I've used a thick cotton lead for Astro for the last year or so. Put knots in it, too. Works great. Just be prepared for an extra dose of "horse" comments!

Actually there are a few horse products that work great for Danes.I use the fly spray, body brush and rubber curry brush on both my horse and Danes.I also bought this ball for horses you can hang it in their stall kind of thing.I hung it in a tree for the dogs and they love it.

          Hehe...I just thought of something...

The next 'You got a saddle for that thing?' comment you get while walking your great dane...you could say, 'no saddle but here's my lunge line'...:P

          Can't help it...

Actually, while I was at a horse and tack auction a few months ago, they had a little saddle. So, of course, I bought it. I couldn't resist, nobody else was bidding on it because it was to small to really do anything with, but perfect size for a dane. Now, I don't put it on them, but, when someone asks "Do you have a saddle for them?" I can say, "Yes, as a matter of fact, I DO!!".

That ought to cause some fun, hehe. I got a new one the other day, though. A fellow watched us walk by and proclaimed, "There's the Hound of the Baskervilles!"
